Like all of us these days, I went straight to the Internet to start my search. The challenge is I didn't have a whole lot of success in finding bags or reviews that explicitly told whether or not they'd work with full frame DSLRs. Eventually, I was able to find some candidates and narrowed my choices down to the Tenba Mini Messenger and Think Tank Retrospective 7. Both bags were great in their own right, but in the end, the Tenba offered the best value.
Overall, the bag has a business-like look. Upon first glance, the average person wouldn't think it was a camera bag. But when you look at it from the side, the width of the bag tells you that this bag holds more than books and a laptop. It doesn't quite have the hipster-cool look of the Retrospective, but what the Tenba lacks in "coolness", it makes up in utility.
Reviews of this bag knock the fact that you can't silence the Velcro that holds the flap down--ideal for situations where the noise would be distracting (school play, wedding, etc.). What Tenba did instead was include a Quick Access Zipper, which allows you to get right into the bag from the top without even lifting the flap. For me this is a killer feature because it's much more efficient than lifting a flap of a traditional messenger.
Bottom line, this is a great little bag and I simply wanted to share with folks in my position that this bag will accommodate a full frame DSLR w/ 24-70mm 2.8 lens attached. A big bonus is the bag is large enough to hold a 70-200 2.8 and 13" MacBook Pro as well.
What is it:
A lightweight, durable daily laptop/camera messenger bag
Tenba quality and durability (1000 Denier Nylon, YKK Zippers, Duraflex Clips)
Lightweight and relatively compact
Better than average utility than competition
Doesn't have a camera bag look
A lot of storage pockets for smaller items
Quick Access zipper is a killer feature
Removable dividers allow for customization of camera gear
Holds full frame DSLR (Nikon D800, Canon 5D MkIII) with attached 24-70mm lens
Can hold a 70-200mm lens
Holds up to 13" laptop (MacBook Pro)
Great overall value
Not quite as cool looking or stealthy as other messenger bags in this space (eg. Think Tank Retrospective)
Padding on strap could be thicker
No rain cover included--common with camera bags at this price point
No option to silence the Velcro fasteners that hold down bag flap
I ended up removing the padded insert and using it just as a laptop, go to the office type of bag. It's excellent for this purpose.
If you want to use it for the camera and lenses, it will hold longer lenses easier than shorter ones. You could fit small APS or 3/4th size camera in, a long lense and a flash (longer will fit easier). There will be a room for a thin 15 inch laptop as well. Maybe some small accessories (it has decent amount of small compartments for them).
While I wanted the smallest and lightest bag possible, I also needed enough room for my note journal, 1-2 thin files, charger, Bose headphones (I delayed years before buying the Bose and regret the delay now.), and cell phone charger. All of this gear fits very nicely. Even with the DLSR+Lens' very securely holstered in the main compartment (rarely carried), there is plenty of room for all my required kit + last minute additions acquired in route. It's either/or for the DLSR or Bose headphones though. Included are velcro movable dividers that you can fine tune to get very secure holstering of your gear. An added bonus is that I can also carry my sealable insulated coffee mug (tall). I show up at the office with my gear AND my tall mug of espresso.
When I first received the Mini Messenger the laptop compartment was very snug. Definitely usable but it was and still is much easier to put the X1 in thin edge first. Definitely a very good and secure laptop cradle system. One minor nit - I cannot get the X1 into or out through the direct access main compartment zipper. This was a bit disappointing as I didn't want o always peel open the velco flap + strap clips to pull out the X1. Even with the 13" Air, Macbook Pro and Ultrabooks, I would consider ordering the 15" version of the Messenger (Small?) so you could store/extract through the direct access zipper. Don't think a 14" ultrabook would fit in the Mini - it won't work. Get the 15" version.
The outside and inside accessory pockets are also just about perfect. There are pockets just the right size to hold my car keys and company back on the outside. On the back there is also a full size slot that will hold a file folder. Even has perfectly sized for passport pockets and boarding pass pockets in the back. The full-sized back zipper pocket is great to dump my watch, wallet, and change in going through security. The inside pockets under the flap are perfect for pens, business cards, and other niblets.
The Tenba Mini Messenger is also extremely light. Sometimes it feels too light and I double check that the X1 is in it and it always is. The handle is also well padded and shoulder strap is excellent.
The size of the bag, even with everything in it, looks almost comical under an airline seat. You could probably get two of the Mini's under seat. It's really that small.
Overall this is by far the closest to the perfect road warrior bag I have ever found. If you are looking for just the right size, extremely light, and very comfortable then you should figure out why you shouldn't buy this bag.
Check my reviews - I rarely "glow" about products but this Tenba Mini Messenger is as close to the perfect road warrior brief that I have ever found. I actually smile occasionally when I see or pick up my Tenba. The other bag on my short list was the Tumi small cordura brief. I prefer the top load of the Tumi, but have to give the handle (you have to squeeze 2 handles together on the Tumi), weight and carry capacity to the Tenba. Also the Tumi was expensive enough that it feel into the "requires lots of deliberation" range.
I am considering picking up the 15" version for international flights so that I can carry both the Bose headphones and the DLSR. I would still use the Mini for my daily bag since I don't carry the DLRS and phones daily.
One recommendation I have for all cordura bags/luggage is to give them a liberal spraying with 3M Scotchguard before you take them on safari. I do this with all my luggage and it keeps them looking new for a very long time. Well worth the $6 and 15 minutes in the long run.
Really nice bag! Holds a lot of equipment, much more then I ever expected judging by its small outside size.
This is the perfect bag for extended day trips.
Holds my Sony A77M2 with Sigma 18-250mm lens attached, Sigma 10-20mm lens, Sigma 50-500mm OS lens, Rokinon 8mm fisheye lens, Minolta 50mm lens, and Kenko 1.4x teleconverter.
Also holds my Sony RX100 and numerous accessories.
Spare batteries, battery chargers and a blower brush fit neatly into this bag, with still room to spare!
Awesome versatility, really impressed! It has a pocket for a 13" laptop, but I doubt if I will ever use it for such, a collapsable reflector and Gary Fong WB dome fits in it quite nicely instead.
Highly recommended, the quality and versatillity is hard to beat!
