Although the title means something along the lines of "no need for Tenchi," everyone wants the hapless hero of this popular series. These 13 OAV episodes reunite the cast from the TV show, but with some changes. Sasami is initially much younger and less domestic; grandfather Masaki turns out to be Yosho, the long-lost Jurai prince who was betrothed to Ayeka centuries ago; genius-in-residence Wasshu reveals an unexpected bond with interstellar outlaw Ryoko. The tone is a little racier than the broadcast version: Ryoko runs around naked and the attempts to seduce the terminally klutzy Tenchi are more pointed.
In the first adventure (episodes 1-7), Tenchi inadvertently wakes a mummified demon who was imprisoned at the Masaki family shrine 700 years ago--none other than space pirate extraordinaire Ryoko. The problems she causes are dwarfed by the arrival of Jurai princesses Ayeka and Sasami, bubble-brained Galactic Police Agent Miyoshi--and interstellar criminal Kagato. Assuming the role (and costume) of the Crown Prince of Jurai, Tenchi defeats the evil Kagato with a magic sword that resembles the lightsabers in Star Wars.
Unexpected arrivals keep the Masaki household in chaos in the later, shorter adventures (episodes 8-13), including a baby cousin of Tenchi's, a shape-shifting robot who impersonates Ryoko, and the Emperor and Empress of Jurai. The writers occasionally lose track of the plot, especially in episode 13, "Here Comes Jurai," but Tenchi has never been noted for its logic. In all the episodes, the filmmakers manage to balance interplanetary threats, teenage romance, and broad comedy with their usual aplomb.
The Tenchi Encyclopedia (powered by Wasshu OS) offers short biographies of the main characters with clips and stills, pencil tests, digital comics, Japanese commercials, and full credits for the series. A must-have for Tenchi fans. --Charles Solomon

Tenchi soon gets into a lot of trouble as he discovers the TRUE history of his family and about the power locked up in his blood.
This collection is the best, even with all the new volumes and improved collections that are now out. The first two DVDs have the first 13 episodes, plus the bonus 14th episode, and the third DVD is the Tenchi Encyclopedia with interviews, info files, trailers and more. This is the perfect way to caught up on the series without paying a lot of cash. Better do it soon, because the Third OVA should be available any day now!
Special mention must go to Pioneer who THX digitally remastered this series with astonishing results. The image is crystal clear, with very minimal artifacting and no other defects whatsoever on my set.
Well, on to the nitty-gritty. What do you get:
* All 13 original animation videos (OAV)
* Japanese (standard), English languages
* English subtitles and English hearing-impaired.
* A bonus dvd with the tenchi encyclopedia
* A fold-out case for all 3 dvds.
The packaging looks nice, but I'd rather they'd went for actual jewel-cases, as they tend to be stronger.
The menus are simple and basic, but look suitably Tenchi-like.
The intro/credits are the original japanese ones, but unless you enable the hearing-impaired subtitles you won't get subtitles for the songs.
Hmm, what else to tell. If you liked the TV series, you'll like these OAV's even more as the animation is a lot better and it's more Tenchi. If, like me, you had never heard/seen of Tenchi before, this box-set is a very good place to start.
I really couldn't find any major fault with this set, so go out and buy it!
In the course of the series Tenchi will discover incredible truths about himself as he tries to maintain his sanity among all the women vying for his affections, and powerful villians who have bad intentions for Earth. Make sure you have a chair with a good seat belt because you're in for one REALLY wild ride. One word of warning though this series contains adult humor and some nudity so I strongly suggest no kids under the age of 18 watch this. The acting in the English version and the subtitles in the Japanese language version are fairly good. And the THX and Dolby sound make for a first rate experience. That's why I'm giving Tenchi Muyo OVA (OVA Translates to: No Need for Tenchi by the by) a big thumbs up and a 5 star rating.
