The password was a little confusing. The default on the label is actually for both wifi and setup url. Other routers usually have open security for the default wifi and "admin" or "password" for setup url.
I used this to replace a 2-router setup of router and ap. The default setup ip address for the Tenda AC15 is 192.168.0.1 where as my old system was 192.168.1.1. I was afraid that I have to do a lot of messing around to get my existing devices to work with this router. It turned out it was no work at all. I just change the AC15 ip to my old router's, it figured out the subnet automatically. Then I changed the SSID, wifi password, DHCP range, setup url password to my old system and all the devices in the house worked. The signal range is excellent and the strength is stronger at the most remote corner of my house even without an ap. I am getting about 90 down and 11 up mbps from wifi 25 feet away(straight line) with many walls in between. I have 2 laptops, 2 cell phones (using wifi calling), 2 tablets, 1 voip phone, 1 smart tv, 1 roku, 2 android TV boxes, 1 wireless printer, 1 nas, and all are working without any issues, granted I am not using all of them at the same time.
There is an on/off switch for the router which I think is important. I zapped my old router when power cycle the unit by pulling the power cable. Beside the password, the other thing I don't like about the AC15 is there are only 3 lan ports when 4 ports are more universal for other routers. Customers may get a surprise finding out there is an extra ethnet cable with no place to go.
Additional comments after running about 2 weeks:
The router continue to perform well. However, I did found some short comings. There is option to install VPN on the router. But the protocols are limited to PPTP and L2TP. According to my VPN provider, these are not very secure protocols. I was going to install it anyway. Then I found a very stupid restriction On the user name and password for the VPN account (which is none of Tenda's business), it is restricted to alphanumeric and underscore. It is very common for any type of accounts to use email address as user name. The "@" in the email violated the restriction that means I can't set up the VPN with the latest Tenda firmware. I did further searching, you can actually flash "Tomato" firmware to this router. But with Tomato, the 5G speed is very slow. Since I did not want to give up the 5G speed, I passed on the Tomato firmware.
I know Tenda is monitoring the reviews, I hope you guys will update the firmware to support open vpn and also remove the meaningless restrictions on VPN account user name and password.
When my town went from 2.74Mb download Verizon DSL to 90+Mb LoS wifi broadband I knew I needed to step it up in the router dept. again. I didn't have a lot of cash so I got the best reviewed AC router I could find. Despite the fact it only has 3 ethernet jacks rather than the typical 4, and the wifi speeds aren't blazing compared to some, it does make up for that with a nice package, a simple and you could say elegant interface and thus far solid firmware. It has not crashed a single time in a month, something I can't say about any other router I've ever owned, including the 10yo Netgear 300n router that has been the backbone of my network for nearly a decade. Every time the ASUS died, I'd get the Netgear out for a few days and it would work time and time again. But it needed reboots somewhat frequently.
So far, that isn't true with the Tenda. We're pretty heavy users of internet in my house. Two adults, two kids. If your kids are anything like the two I've inherited, they spend most of their time watching YouTube clips of people screaming at Minecraft videos. So they each have a PC, one wired and one not. One has a cell phone, the other has an iPad. My girlfriend and I each have an iPhone 6, and Macbook Pro's. I also have a PS4, Wii, 2 Chromecasts, a Lenovo tablet for the Chromecasts and an Onkyo home theater receiver on the network. I have the adult gear on the 5.0Ghz AC channel, and the kids stuff on the 2.4Ghz N. The PS4 and one of the PC's is on the wired network, running through an 8 port gigabit router. With Netflix and two kids streaming YouTube incessantly I've seen exactly one incidence of buffering. Who knows, that could have been my new ISP, rather than my network or the router.
I work in IT, and while this isn't pro gear it is easy to use. It doesn't have a lot of QoS stuff you can set up on it, but it does the basics very, very well. From what I can see, this is a good piece of gear if you need a moderate capacity and have more than a handful of devices to connect. If It should start to smoke or catch fire I'll update my review, but I see no reason to deduct any stars from this review and would recommend it to anyone needing to save some cash but still wants AC performance.
User interface: 7/10
It is effective and simple to learn how to use, there are a few limits that it doesn’t do despite offering the options.
Parental controls are simple and effective for limiting device connectivity, however it only means if they use the WiFi to connect to the internet then it can’t be used. Phone hotspots ignore this.
Website filters are not working but other than that everything is very quick to understand including data caps on how much the device can use while connected,
Other controls allow you to create guest networks so you don’t have to give out your actual WiFi password which I highly recommend changing from the default one they give on the box.
Because I use a provider that has data caps I make use of the schedule tool to make sure there are no times at the middle of the night when I’m asleep and something is using data. This is a very useful thing to me as a cash strapped college student cause I can’t pay for more data cap extensions.
The other tools are fully effective and the range on the router is phenomenal. It supports 5g internet and regular internet which reach through my house with no difficulty on signal speeds. I would recommend fiddling with the antennas and transmit power through the app to ensure full signal strength if you have multiple floors.
To sum this up, it’s a great product that I haven’t had any issues with and provides almost every single feature you could ask for. Despite a few features not functioning like advertised through their app, there are no complaints from me about the cheap and effective router that certainly over performs for the price you pay.
I hope this helped given my own experience with this router and company.
