Easy and gentle to fly, camera works very well.
Learn in an open outside area, with little or no wind. Skip this step and you'll be unhappy.
Don't fly far away to start. You'll lose orientation.
If you do lose orientation fly forward (push the right stick.) Turn the quad toward you (left stick left or right) and fly back. Descend.
Don't go high at all to start. 10-20 feet is more than enough. Higher than that and the winds are different. It WILL float away.
"Always fly 3 mistakes high" doesn't apply. Gravity still does.
If you're prone to doing dumb things get the non-camera version first.
Don't be dissuaded by the short fly times. When learning you'll need a few minutes after this time to relax and review your flight.
Fly responsibly. Don't take pictures that others wouldn't want published and hopefully they won't shoot it out of the sky. Hopefully.
Don't fly it where you can lose it. You will.
Always assume the battery will die at the worst possible moment. It will.
IMHO this is the best value for ease of use and functionality.
And the blue is pretty slick!
FYI this is my 3rd quad so I'm no expert. My 2nd was the non camera version (syma x11.) I've flown this one probably 30 times and haven't broken anything yet!
The button on the back right side of the quad controls the camera if you don't want to use the buttons on the controller. Hold for a second or so to start video recording. Click again to stop video or take a snapshot.
There's a green LED visible in the rear of the quad when the camera is in standby. A red led will blink when recording.
Stop recording before unplugging the battery or you'll lose the video!
The 250mAh batteries are the proper size for this quad. I've tried 380's but the handling suffered in gentle flight. Vortex ring state is becomes a real problem.
With 250's I get up to 6 1/2 minute flights and 380's I get about 8 1/2 minutes.
We have talked about painting it with glow-in-the-dark paint for when he loses it at night. And although there is a slight warning that the battery is about to die, he needs a longer warning, as that is how it ended up in the last tree... just died and crashed. It takes 30-60 mins to fully charge and then flies for about 5 mins... which is good because the pets hate it and it does make a little noise when it flies around, so me and the pets are glad its just 5 minutes. Overall, this has been a great beginner drone and a great gift! I'm very happy with this purchase.
After reading the reviews I finally clicked the buy button.
PURCHASE AND ASSEMBLY:
I got an additional "Tenergy 3.7V 380mAh LiPO" which was on offer for free.
The model is larger than palm size and quite stable indoors as well as outdoors. Batteries came partially charged.
Remote works fine with rechargeable batteries.
Spent around 10 minutes fine tuning the trim. Was quite smooth compared with helis.
I have taken it to a height of around 50ft and it was hovering nicely there.
I successfully managed to drop it dead on ice and grass from a height of ~25 feet but no damage to the QC.
I saw that snow penetrated the battery compartment (which is open). I just scraped the snow and it was back to fly.
Batteries take roughly an hour to charge and 7-10 minutes to fly so it is much fun to have a 7 dollar additional battery.
Outdoor flying experience is way more fun than indoors
Surprisingly I did not expected 2MP cheapo camera to function this well. It takes decent pics in daylight outside even while flying
There is lot of noise in indoor shoots and while night. It is super cool to have Arial photographs of your community from 50ft.
There are certain technical flaws in the camera like 'complex distortion' but absolutely Ok at this price. Videos are not good.
I'm recommending getting one of those "6 batteries and charger" packs, that enable charging all the batteries at the same time. I bought one with 520mah batteries and, while they are bigger, drone doesn't have any problems.
With 520mah batteries it stays in the air for 6-8 minutes, last ~2 minutes it is noticeably slower/weaker. Total for about 8-10 minutes.
I'm not planning to fly outside, I got a 450 heli for that, but for indoor flying in the living room the size is perfect.
