How to clean out the solder

This seems to be the exact same as the Velleman VTDESOL3U (Velleman VTDESOL3U Vacuum Desoldering Pump With Heater 30W). I found the manual on Velleman's UK site. The Tenma does have a nicer cord...but the price difference...(-1 star for value)

At 30Watts, it is best for leaded solder and not lead-free or silver type solder. It does work very well at fixing mistakes in through-hole soldering. I used this to desolder a 28-pin ZIF that I put on the wrong side of a board. This desolderer made the job so much easier than using solder wick. I desoldered all 28-pins in one go without any loss in suction. Sure, its not a dedicated desolder station, but it does clean out the hole so it is open again, nearly 100% of the time once I worked on my technique. I did go back with the soldering iron to free some pins stuck to the side and to clean off the area with solder wick.

The whole thing is held together by the spring force created by the compression spring inside.
1. Turn off power and wait for the iron to cool completely.
2. Rotate the top of the plunger 180 degrees to expose a small tab that you can pull against. The top can only rotate one way. Nice touch.
2. Push the plunger down a bit (not so far that it latches, say about 1/4 way down)
3. Pull OUT (outward towards you or outward away from the rest of the iron) FIRMLY on the tab. Keep your other hand around were the button is to keep everything from exploding as the spring becomes free. It takes some force the first time and putting it back together is much easier as others have written.

I bought it with sheer doubt in my mind, then,"oh well", then my first usage on a capacitor, followed by "Holy Sh*t!!, I don't believe it; IT WORKS, AND I'M WIGGLING THE CAPACITOR FREE WITH NO EXTRA EFFORT!!! I then changed out fifty some caps in a Bose wave radio with the same results, keeping an eye on any reduced performance (none) due to me not cleaning it until the end. Buy this I'm free of fear of de-soldering; thank God I'm free at last!!!

I have one and ordered this for a friend as a gift. I am a retired electronics tech and used many tools. This gives professional results for not a lot of money. The cord is about the right length for bench work and using the vacuum is a snap. It takes a short time to heat up but the temp is not too hot and with a bit of practice anyone could use this with good results quite easily. I bought extra tip and O-ring for mine but the original should last a long time if properly taken care of. A good value.

As others have described, this works surprisingly well. So much better than using a solder sucker and a seperate soldering iron. Years ago, I used to use a very expensive professional desoldering station. Not saying this is just as good, but it is pretty close. Seriously. For occasional through hole desoldering, this is all you need.

No instructions, but it works great. To clean the old solder out of the yellow suction chamber, I inserted a screwdriver behind the metal plunger shaft and pryed it forward. A little prying on each side did the job. It went back together easily.👍

Nice idea, but didn't work for me.

Maybe I didn't have the skills to use this iron properly, but it didn't work for me. It didn't create a good enough suction to remove the solder, mainly because it wasn't flexible enough to create a seal around most solder joints I was trying to remove solder from. I guess the best method to use a stand alone solder remover with a Teflon tip and a separate iron like most guys. At least that worked better.

So far so good. I bought this when my cheap plastic solder sucker started clogging up after every other desolder. Solder wick is still necessary but this is great for quick component removal. Just remember to tin the tip on this thing and get a stand. I've melted a few things by letting it just sit on my bench. Tinning the tip will help it from becoming useless.
