In some cases, these nomadic tents are still in use where the nomadic cultures have been able to hang on to their territories and their nomadic lifestyles. In other cases, such as the North American boreal forests and Arctic, traditional lifestyles are no longer widely practiced and so the tents have disappeared from daily use. A book such as this therefore provides valuable documentation of vanishing technologies.
If you want to use this book as a guide to constructing a replica of a given nomadic tent, you will have to do some experimenting since as the author himself states, this book is not a how-to guide. The information provided comes from other primary sources although the author has apparently built some replicas of tents shown himself. The bio tells us that the author is a carpenter. This experience seems to reflect in the drawings which try to give as much structural detail as was available to the author.
The list of chapters in this book is as follows: 1. the black tent. 2. The Middle eastern mat-skin tent. 3. the yurt. 4. Siberian tents. 5. the Lapp tent. 6. the Inuit tent. 7.Tents of the North American Taiga. 8. The Tipi.
The book contains a bibliography which would be useful to any reader who wants to get more detailed information on any particular tent style.
