A good warm-up for an imminent classic

If you haven't heard At the Gates, this isn't the one to start with. That would be their next album, "Slaughter of the Soul". However, once you've absorbed that one, make sure to get this one, too. At the Gates set a standard for Swedish death metal bands, basically breaking the constraints of traditional death, for a more melodic, exciting sound. This is sort of an EP, padded out with a few live tracks. Good stuff, but the band's masterpiece would be it's next one.

this doesn't deserve to be 519 in death metal sales

... Anyone here love death metal?
Thoght so then it is essential that you check out this album. Can there be a more perfect song than the swarm?
Adrian erlandsson has really impressed me here, blast beat drumming..... so whats the big deal so does every other dm band. Yes true but look at the fills; such introcate rhythm turnarounds from slow to fast and changing the pace with his fills i dare you to find a better rhythmic fill than on fevered circle.

The guitars here are raw but also very mellodic. Imagine in flames on steriods and a bit more original deatgh metal flavour. Amazing soloing but the weird thing is there seems to be soloing all the way through kinda like sentenced with the brutal rhythm axe then the lead over the top all the time.

The vocals are growly but what i love is that you can unerstand and hear everyword. I love cannabil corpse but i wanna hear lyrics! thats why the vocals here stand out.

It's a decent effort.

Format: Audio CD

I like some Death Metal along the lines of Meshuggah, Nile, Death, Cynic, etc. I mention this as people have vastly different preferences when it comes to metal. Even with those bands I have albums or songs I cannot stand.

With ATG, they still have not found the sound they do in 'Slaughter'. I just cannot get past the singers in some of these bands. Where Meshuggah has a singer who blends and utilizes the power of his voice for the most part, Linberg sounds a little thin and scrappy. He has changed his vocals on every record and this one is closer to SotS but still not quite up to par.

Credit to him for trying but this isn't my thing. The bands that were to follow in this wake are also mostly garbage. So much for innovation but it happens. SotS is a much better record.

At the Gates has done better, but if you don't own it....

This album by "At the gates" does not compare to "Slaughter of the Soul" so if you are trying to decide which to get.. there you go. But.. everyone should own all of their cd's and their are some incredible melodic riffs on this disc including an acoustic that involves to acoustics, a chelo and a violin.. and if you are familiar with "At The Gates" you know this one will be good. Thanx

At the gates is ALWAYS good.And this album is one of the best album they have recorded.Every songs are beautiful in this album.In my opinion if you haven't this album you must buy it immediately.

Kill the worm that is depression...

This album is so painfully beautiful. Don't let tags like NWSDM put it down. It is unique and doesn't need the reference of a genre for its appreciation. Tomas Lindberg lets out such an anguished heart-rending scream that I believe he feels the same inside. For some reason, he reminds me of Ricky Fitz in American Beauty who sees all `the beauty in this world' and feels `like he can't take it.' To provide a further masochistic twist to the experience, the guitars are also incredibly beautiful and sing like tortured angels. This is one album that makes me foolishly believe in an eternity- of space, time or melancholic beauty. Terminal Spirit Disease, the song, numbs me every single time I hear it and makes me a spectator of things. I feel wise, cursed and beyond redemption every time I hear it. Again, Lindberg's soaring scream sears my heart and I suspect I actually bleed inside on hearing it. This music is as dangerous as mind-bending drugs.

I'd recommend putting it on a spaceship for Extra-Terrestrial life

ATG, era 2

I personally like this 'new' version of ATG far better than their first two releases. Don't get me wrong 'The Red...' and 'With Fear...' are both very good albums. Just what that NWOSDM was ment to be - a bastard between Death and Black Metal...melody,aggression and brutality combined together. Only (to me) ATG made their vision a bit too chaotic and hard to listen, while here and on 'Slaughter...' they did a perfect job! I'd say they finally calmed down a bit and found themselves in a most perfect way possible. Most important thing is - they NEVER watered down their style like many did ( In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, etc.). Anyways, get this gem together with 'Slaughter of the Soul' and enjoy the real NWOSDM.

Godly Grim Death Metal

This is a great example of how Swedish Death Metal should sound, grim, harsh, and as cold as the worst nordic winter. This is technical death metal at it's best and a milestone for this band. Contrary to popular belief, I feel this is this bands last great release as the later stuff gets a bit too melodic and a tad on the weak side. This album and The Red in the Sky..... are the epitome of At the Gates' material.
