I have been running a Synology DS216j (RAID 1) with 2x4TB disks for 4+ years and it's been rock-solid. But I was running out of space so instead of upgrading to 8GB drives I thought I'd upgrade to a RAID 5 system with 4x4TB drives. Of course Synology is ridiculously expensive so I thought I'd buy a Terramaster F4-210 for $199.
What a mistake. Let me list SOME of the problems I have discovered over the last week of trying to convert over my system:
1. The UI is web-like pretty but functionally has huge flaws. It looks like they tried to model it after Synology's. But you can start multiple File Managers and multiple copies and then the copy dialog gets confused between what it is copying. On Synology there is a background task window that shows you what is happening. There is no background task window under TOS - if you lose the dialog then a zombie process sits out there copying away with no way of verifying it or stopping it.
2. Multiple times I tried a copy-paste operation and nothing happened. Or did it? You can't tell.
3. Multiple copies ended "successfully" but with fewer files than the source.
But the MAIN reason you cannot/should not buy this system is that I have no confidence their RAID system is actually working:
1. I copied all my files over from my Synology onto one new 4TB drive. That took days. I could never get NFS or FTP working, so had to settle for SMB/CIFS from Synology to Terramaster and USB hard drives.
2. Then I shutdown my Synology, extracted the 2 4TB drives and added them.
3. Then I went to the Storage Manager interface to convert Single Disk to RAID 5. NO, impossible. you can only add ONE drive and convert to RAID 1. And that was predicted to take 648 hours (that's 27 days!!). Fortunately it only took 16 hours.
4. Then I thought "well I bet I can now add my 2 remaining drives and have a RAID 5 system". NO, impossible, you can only add ONE drive and convert to a 3 drive RAID 5 system. Hopefully I will be able to add another drive after this finished (in 1000 hours it predicts!)
- Did I mention that all the dialogs are confusing and poorly written, telling you what the current configuration is, not what it will be when you press Confirm?
- Did I mention that when you go to Delete a big folder it may just stop working
- Did I mention that you can set your Shared Folders to NOT have a Recycle Bin (important when you have limited storage and are just copying files) but when you delete files, they still get copied to the Recycle Bin, which of course makes the whole deletion process take at least twice as long
I could go on, but you get the idea. THIS PRODUCT IS NOT READY TO TRUST YOUR FILES TO. Suck it up and buy a Synology. And lest you think I'm a shill for Synology, no I've still got my Terramaster but wish I didn't.
IT FAR EXCEEDED MY EXPECTATIONS!!!
yes, it has a plastic, less quality feel to it, but everything fits in snug, solid, it feels very well made. it certainly does what I wanted it to do, and can do far more, certainly far more than I needed it to do.
downside, 1 gb of ram, (the model that I got, and I will research and upgrade to the highest possible RAM that I can) probably sucks for TRANSCODING for applications like PLEX. (I am not sure, I am a rookie in that area)
but overall, I AM BEYOND PLEASED WITH THIS PRODUCT. its a good feeling when you believe you got so much more than what you paid for, almost like a Black Friday deal.
but its been less than 24 hours, so I will learn more about the shortcomings of a $200.00 4 bay NAS, but running it for maybe the last 18 hours, I so far...
ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS PRODUCT!!!!
***side note, a confusing thing to me
I have 4x 4TB Western Digital RED Hard Drives in this TerraMaster F4-210 4-Bay NAS
Running in RAID 5, where I would expect to have started with 12TB
and the NAS is only seeing that I have 10.6 TB, missing 1.4 TB seems to be quit a bit, and maybe it has to do with the calculations of bytes counted in terrabytes, but it started the Calculations seeing 12TB during the set-up, and after the set-up, it shows I have (x) used of 10.61 TB.
at the moment, it feels as if it would take forever to use up 10.61 TB, until I get to that point, in a few years(I felt that way about my Qnap, also running 4x 4TB western digital Red, and then started to get to the Limit of my Capacity)

It consumes a decent bit of power while it's on, but you can schedule it to only come on when needed. So I scheduled it to come on at 1am, do a nightly backup of my PC, then turn off again. I wouldn't recommend doing this if you like sleeping: there is a loud beep that echos throughout the whole house every time the device powers on and powers off. I've spent a few hours checking online and there is no way to turn this off. There is a software button labelled "disable buzzer" but that's for alert beeps, not power on/off beeps. I'm considering taking it apart and de-soldering the buzzer because this ridiculous ""feature"" pretty much makes the box unusable as a nightly backup. (2 months later edit: I continued checking online and looking around settings and confirmed there's no way to stop the loud beeping. I took the unit apart and desoldered the buzzer and it seems to be working fine. However this solution is ridiculous.)
Ok so that aside. It doesn't come with wifi, which for a £200 network attached storage box is insulting. I was going to move the unit into the garage so that I can't hear the beep at 1am, but no, it has to be wired to the router with ethernet unless you buy a usb wifi adapter.
It's nice that it runs some apps, but running Plex off it is a joke. It struggles to transcode even moderate bitrate content - you can forget 4k high quality content - and if your Plex library exists on the internal storage volume then there's no way to get the app to see your files. There's a permission barrier between the app and the "User" files. Again I spent hours trying to resolve this and just came across other frustrated users on the forums with the same issue and no solution. Perhaps a solution exists but if so it's evaded dozens of technically-able users on the forums. A workaround is to use an external disk which is visible to plex.. but at that point why are you spending £200 on a NAS if it requires an external disk.
I also ran into an issue where my nightly backup was running each night with no problem, then one day it stopped working. I hadn't touched it, but it had decided that the user account that was doing the backup didn't have permission to write to the backup folder. I resolved it easily enough by removing and re-adding the user, but this sort of glitch is indicitave of poor software quality.
Overall the software is usable but feels sort of cheap, and it seems to have good features but simple quality of life issues make the box a bad buy. Do yourself a favour and spend a bit extra on a reputable brand who will pay attention to detail. I wish I had.

Installed with 4x8TB NAS rated drive into RAID5 with ext4 filesystem. Setup was easy and well guided through. (Honestly I expected that more time will be needed, similar to setting up a DIY Freenas system, but it didn’t. Setup was simple and fast).
On the Performance side, I get about 80MBps reads and writes.
This unit has failed twice (once during a copy from USB connected drive with their USB Copy BETA app and another time during overnight file copy over SMB share). That unit was able to recover and re-synchronize all disks afterwards. TNAS tech support was quick to respond and support.
4 stars for now and will see how it goes. Overall I am satisfied with the unit at this point.
February 2021 Update:
Well, the unit has failed 3 times since the original review. Last failure was was triggered after a successful FW update. The unit worked for 3 days and then decided to go back to factory settings. My 24TB of data is not accessible right now and not certain there is a way to recover. Tech support is disengaged and don't seem to care your precious data. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT AND A WASTE OF TIME, MONEY and your nerves. I don not recommend this product to anyone.

The App Store is plentiful and device can support docker which allows you to run apps without needing full stack os environments for what you need to do.
Comparable hardware and noticeably cheaper than other brands.
If any nitpicking is to be done I’d say it’s the firmware, but, if you know what you are doing you can get round those issues. It is a little plastic-y but mine is in a (well ventilated!) cupboard and keeps quite enough. Even with 5 disks spinning at full toot.
