The Clown at Midnight is a 1998 movie starring two of my favorite actors: Christopher Plummer & Margot Kidder. Neither of them has a lot of screen time but they make the most of what they have. As a "slasher" flick, this one is slow to get started but once it does, it produces enough mayhem to satisfy. The plot is standard fare: get a bunch of kids and lock them in a building then pick them off one by one. It's pretty obvious from the opening sequence who's doing what and why. That didn't matter to me; I took it for what it was and enjoyed it as such. I didn't expect much to begin with so it came as a nice surprise that I liked and wanted to keep it for future viewing. It comes on a DVD separate from the other feature that's included in the same case. It's in standard format, not widescreen.

Phantom Racer is a movie that has been shown on the Syfy Channel. That alone says much.
The plot, such as it is, concerns an `accident' during a race that causes the death of one of the drivers. Eons later, his brother rebuilds the death car just as the other driver (involved in the deadly `accident') happens to pops into town. For reasons that never make sense in these types of movies, the ghost of the dead racer suddenly begins to haunt the car, taking it out on some deadly spins around town. People die, there's old history dug up between the surviving racer (Greg Evigan) and his old girlfriend/the dead racer's old girlfriend/wife of the dead racer's brother (Nicole Eggert). There's other complications, not the least of which is the obligatory dumb sheriff (Winston Rekert), who surpasses all idiocy until proven dead wrong about EVERYTHING. Secrets are revealed! Yadda-yadda-yadda. I'm ashamed to say I actually liked it and plan to keep both movies. This one is in widescreen and is also on a separate DVD. So if you decide to keep one or the other...

It's about TIME The Clown At Midnight hit DVD but it's too bad it had to share a case with Phantom Racer and didn't have any features. It's nice to have a copy of the classic horror after all these years, but an independent release would be nicer.

Here are a few neat tales, and creepy to a point, but not like what you would see at the movies...Well, at least one should not. Nonetheless, if you like creepy stories, such as "phantom clowns," you might like this one.
