The story mostly focuses solely on Tess, who is the protagonist with an antagonist plot line for much of the book; however, her error in judgement and openness towards her flaws makes her worthy of admiration. One of the most interesting parts of the series is less about the characters themselves, but the immersion of foreign policy and international relations, which is covered throughout the novel. The Valkyries might be 100% fictional, with an unrealistic agenda to save the entire world, but the issues with Boko and ISIS are true events that have ravished the world with little to biased media. This was a refreshing breath of air- the author did a commendable job at educating everyone with knowledge from both perspectives in each conflict.
I love the facts and precise numbers throughout the book, which not only give the reader a sense of the scale of some of the vehicles and weapons involved in terms of cost, but also showing how much Mann has put into research for the book.
Other than a few minor grammatical suggestions I would make, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and feel it was constantly gripping and making me want to turn the page (metaphorically). Even in the few lulls of action in the story, I still had the wish to keep going because of the depth of the characters, I couldn’t wait to find out more about everyone. I enjoyed the style of the writing and feel it fits the type of story and the constant action, as the use of a number of different techniques add to the haste and excitement of the story.
In the novel, Mann takes us into the world of Tess, a very attractive strong independent woman, who so happens to be a military trained combat pilot, virtuoso musician and all round badass and her band of equally attractive, independent and skilled female friends/co-workers (Valkyries) and their escapades as they try to make the world a safer place.
The book tackles themes like; contemporary terrorism, the fight against contemporary terrorism, world politics, etc, and yet the writer still found a way to interweave themes like family, marriage, art, team work etc.
