Editorial Reviews

"Test Drive is high octane chemistry that keeps the pages turning and your engine revving! If the sexy Johnny Devlin was my mechanic, I'd be ripping out spark plugs on a weekly basis. #iwantjohnny." - Gina L. Maxwell, New York Times & USA Today bestselling author of the Fighting for Love series

"It is always refreshing and endearing to be introduced to a man who is hard and tough on the outside, but sensitive and vulnerable on the inside. Each character is well written and fully developed, without taking attention away from the main leads. Harte has written yet another compelling novel with characters who readers have no choice but to cheer for." - RT Book Reviews, 4 Stars

"Harte's take on the redeemed bad boy is fresh and sexy" - Kirkus

"Fans of sexy, sun, small town romance contemporaries with a strong sense of family are sure to love Harte's latest venture." - Smexy Books

Johnny has been attracted to Lara for the four years and eight months that he has known her. Unfortunately for Johnny, Lara refuses to date patrons of the bar at which she works. Lara has also placed Johnny firmly in the player category, with no interest in becoming another notch on Johnny's bedpost. After a run-in with her sister's ex, in which Johnny comes to the rescue, Lara agrees to go out with him. And here is where the fun begins.

What worked for me - Watching Johnny stress about how to impress this girl with whom he is so infatuated is charming and sweet. We are in Johnny's POV a lot, hearing his internal dialogue about his fears of being good enough to date, but not good enough to love. Johnny is a guy of many layers. He reads, he's smart, he's a bit of a geek, he takes care of the people in his life. Johnny is an all around great guy. The interaction between Lara's nieces and "Pretty Johnny" was sweet and funny.

Lara also worked for me. She is working hard to support herself while putting herself through nursing school. She's also helpful to her family, though they kind of make her crazy. Her view of the world is a little narrow - either she will turn out like her parents, or she has to do a 180. She doesn't quite recognize there are shades of gray as she strives to better her world.

I liked the supporting characters. The voices were clear, and I can't wait to read their stories.

The sexy times were hawt, honest, a little raw, a lot of sweet. Johnny's feelings for Lara are never really in question. Because he doesn't want to let on to Lara how much he cares for her, he doesn't verbalize how he feels, but it all comes out in the sexy times. Very well done.

This was another case of LOVED the H but disliked the h.

Although there was one thing I could have done without for Johnny. I liked that he has a personality. He wasn't just a sexy guy who had a killer body and knew how to use it. He was funny, and sweet, and tried so hard to make dating Lara something special. He genuinely wanted to build a relationship with the h that wasn't just about the hot sexual chemistry. He was a pretty great H and good book boyfriend material.

Lara was a good h up until the half way mark. Again this h (much like Maddy from The Troublemaker Next Door) was always pushing the H away, and overly concerned with money. And yes, I did read the h's history and hangups with her family and I get that she had goals and aspirations but the author made her out to be too materialistic. There was never any real change in opinion for her even after seeing Johnny as more than the one dimensional person she thought he was.

I need equal parts sympathy and understanding from the MCs, (towards each other,) and although Johnny was always sensitive to Lara's wants and needs, it never felt like Lara was ever overly worried about Johnny's. The big break up scene was sad for Johnny! Somehow Lara makes Johnny's emotional insecurities all about her. Instead of understanding how her words might have sounded to him or the fact that his fears stemmed from her own actions with him, she turns around and blames him for not understanding her! There was a split second of concern for him but that gets overshadowed when she gets mad and its back to being all about her.

Meh . . . this was good but for that glaring one sided dilemma. I like my MCs to be on equal footing.

I really enjoyed Test Drive by Marie Harte, which is book #1 in the Body Shop Bad Boys series. The main characters, Lara and Johnny, have an easy chemistry and their constant flirtatious banter made me smile. Their relationship builds over time and it's a slow burn that's definitely worth the wait.

Johnny is a mechanic at a garage, where he works with his buddies Sam, Foley, and Lou. Johnny has a reputation for being a ladies' man, but for years he has been carrying a torch for local bartender Lara. He has asked her out many times, but Lara continually turns him down. When she's not working, she's in school training to be a nurse and is focused on her classes, so she doesn't really have time for a relationship. But when Lara's soon-to-be ex-brother-in-law assaults her, Johnny rushes to help her. Shaken but grateful, Lara finally agrees to go out with Johnny.

I loved this couple. Johnny is not a stereotypical alpha male jerk. Instead, he's genuinely charming and incredibly sweet. He's clearly smitten with Lara before they start dating, but once they make it official, he's a complete goner. He also has a great deal of substance. He may work with his hands, but in his off time he has a hidden geeky side that loves poetry, classic horror movies, and Lord of the Rings. Swoon.

Lara is a feisty, headstrong, and hardworking person. Along with her bartending job, she's also in school for nursing. Money is an issue for her and she's busting her butt to finish her clinicals so that she can have a better life. In addition to this, she helps take care of her two young nieces.

Needless to say, Lara doesn't exactly have time for a relationship right now, which is why she and Johnny keep things casual (but exclusive) at first.
