This is an example of a likely positive test result, note the obvious crimson color change at the tip of the swab. This area should not be sanded or disturbed until lead safe guards are put into place.

They work, but not exactly as described

These swabs are quite easy to use, just dip in household white vinegar to activate. In my experience however, the mustard colored swab does not change to pink/red/violet when exposed to lead. They do work though if used in a slightly different method. Instead of tapping excess vinegar from the swab before rubbing area to be tested, allow the cotton end to remain saturated. With the cotton end pointed downward, rub swab on the area, allowing liquid to build on surface. If the fluid remains mustard or brown color, the area is negative for lead. If, however, the fluid changes to pink/red/violet, lead has been detected.

Don’t make the same mistake as me

I am attempting to rip the carpet off my stairs, strip the paint off the stairs under them, then sand and stain. My house was built in 1950, so prior to sanding the stairs I figured I should test them for lead. Five different spots on the stairway all came out bright red. Same with the trim in the bathroom. Now worried, since I have a young child, I called and setup a lead inspection.
Lead inspector came out yesterday and found NO lead anywhere on the staircase. She tested everywhere with the XRay machine. Bathroom, no lead in the paint either.
Curious I then had to do the front windowsill because this test had came back as no lead. Her X-ray gun reported high levels of lead.
She actually asked me what test kit I used. She had never heard of these. I gave her the rest of the swabs, since they clearly don’t work anyways. She is going to check into them more.
Anyways, don’t waste your money. I ended up spending an additional $125 for a real lead inspection for no reason.

The description on Amazon specifically says that it can test for lead in dishes. In fact, it does NOT test dishes! That pretty much makes it worthless to me. I did test some paint that I know is lead paint, just to see how effective this test kit is, and it did turn a deep red, so the product does work if you’re testing paint. It’s probably not good on much else.

I can’t say I was thrilled to find lead in my basement but it was pretty cool swabbing surfaces and seeing the swabs change color or not. Where there was lead the swabs changed right away. I also had some lead ingots laying around so I decided to record myself testing that, that really gave a strong reaction. I still have some left over I’m really pleased with this product. A good value.

Anyone who is renovating an older home (particularly if you have children) understand the anxiety that lead paint can bring. For years we've used the 3M testers where you squeeze and pop the little vial in the middle of the fabric stick that looks vaguely like a cigarette. That product is remarkably expensive, especially if you have a great many things to test. I'm grateful for the function it has served in helping our family make intelligent decisions related to the painted surfaces in our home, but the cost was painful to bear.

This product, while involving a tiny bit of extra work (finding vinegar), is stunningly less expensive and performs exactly the same. So happy to have found these. Unless you absolutely must have a test you carry in your pocket ready-to-use I cannot imagine any reason to not switch from the 3M tests to these.

great, inexpensive option for lead testing

After using the expensive swabs for years, I gave these a try. I work in occupational safety and have tested lead for many years. These work as expected and are a great budget option for my needs. A couple tips though: 1. If you are testing several layers of lead paint, such as in an old house, cut an inch long shallow "V" through the painted surface with a razor knife to expose all the layers of paint on the surface. If you don't do this you will only test the last layer to be painted. I usually find lead several coats down on old buildings. 2. Rough up the testing surface if possible with sandpaper or scraper, be patient and rub the swab on the test site for the 30 seconds as directed. 3. Don't double dip the swab in the vinegar after touching the swab to the test site, you will contaminate the vinegar for future tests. If you are going to remove the lead yourself, please be safe and look up-follow EPA guidelines for your family and personal safety.

Let me just start off by saying this product is a life saver. My 3 year old had to have his lead/hgb test for preschool. Well, his came back high! Me being the over reacting parent i got online and ordered this product, before his retesting, and I’m so glad I did. I tested every wall/window seal in our house. All came back negative so, at first I though maybe I was doing it wrong, bc something has to be causing it in our home bc he never stays anywhere else. Well shortly after going over all the surfaces In my house it hit me, I didn’t check the back porch. Low and behold I swabbed an old cabinet that was chipping and IMMEDIATELY it turned bright pink. MY HEART SANK. But I was soo relieved to have found the cause of the potentially dangerous outcome if I hadn’t. Anyways, out of all the other kits this one was buy far the absolute best value, you can test many surfaces and get immediate results, and super easy to use. I’m beyond thankful I found this kit and we’ll be buying it again to retest everything after we get the porch taken care of.

These were the best price on Amazon, and with prime delivery are even better. They're easy to use, there's 30 swabs, and they provide accurate lead detection. I've tested 2 areas of paint; a doorframe and a bannister. The doorframe (old gloss paint underlayer) contained lead (see purple swab in pic) the other didn't. To test the paint, I pulled loose bits off to test the bottom layer. Worked a treat and results ready in 30 seconds. Be aware though, they require white vinegar on the swab prior to the test or it won't work. Glad I had some in already, because I didn't pick up on that when I read about them. Don't risk your health scraping or using a heat gun to remove old paint, test the area with these first using these tests to see if you need to take more precautions.

Tested a number of paints around the house. There was one ceiling that immediately turned red after multiple different swabs. It was attached to the original lime plaster so would make sense given its age. All other woodwork in the house appears to be lead free. If I intended on sanding I would still consider getting a professional opinion but I planned on painting over the ceiling anyway (encapsulating the lead paint in place).

These are very easy to use ( just need white vinegar) I’d suggest getting a bottle from Wilko for £1.50. I couldn’t find any at first and spent over £5 for a bottle on Amazon.
