This is essentially a series containing three books, all available with this one download of Tethered - Book 1 Tethered, Book 2 Frayed and Book 3 Tied all for $4.99 (can't beat it). Once I started to read it I could not put it down, Unfortunately I had to stop reading for work and kids, lol but I ended up finishing it in a 24 hour period.
There are so many components to this book that everyone can relate to; friendship, family, struggles of growing up, unconditional love and longing, success, hardship, peer pressure, soul mates, drugs, alcohol, mental illness, suicide, joy, growing older, marriage, children, and so on and so on. The author did a phenomenal job at describing the lives in the story. The detail was written so that I felt as I was living life right along with them somehow worked into their story. I felt what they felt, saw what they saw and experienced what they experienced. I cried when they cried, laughed when they laughed and smiled when they smiled. There were no boring parts to skip over and every word written was necessary to the story.
One of the most interesting things that I enjoyed so about this book were the ethnicities of the two main characters; Emmett and Donya. Emmett is a Caucasian and Donya is African American but like most books this was not a main focus in the book.Read more ›
Little Emmett and Donya skateboarding! So cute.
Melded, unusual families - love it
Side characters were great (except Felix, didn't buy that for one minute)
I liked seeing two soul mates meet as kids and move through the years
Pretty good sex scenes, although they got a little repetitious toward the end
Stilted, stiff dialogue. For a good portion of the book, these characters were supposed to be teenagers. They talked like adults, for the most part. Very flat and boring.
The repeated metaphor of the tether. Yes, we got it! We didn't need it to be repeated every paragraph.
So, I think I would recommend this read to other people, but it just didn't always work for me. To each their own!
Donya and Emmett have something special from childhood. It grows and becomes deeper. By the time she's 14/15 (and he's 18/19), they've kissed but Emmett won't go further because he knows--and tells her--that she is not ready for the type of relationship that he wants. Donya then proceeds to go for the next two to three years with a push/pull on Emmett. She wants him; she isn't ready. She wants him; she isn't ready. And thru all of this, Emmett is there, trying to love her and trying to get her to love him back. And when she doesn't love him back, he starts dating other people which makes her angry. Blah-blah-blah.
So they break up and Emmett dates someone else, who gets pregnant. But on Donya's wedding day, he asks her not to get married, that they can work thru this together. Of course she goes through with the wedding, even knowing she doesn't love her fiance the way she should. The next section of the book turns the husband from a good guy into a jerk, which never quite rings true. But I guess if you married the wrong person on purpose you have to find a way to make him a villain to get out of the marriage.
If you read "Accidentally", you know the story: girl and boy hook up; it is very special; girl pushes boy away; girl wants boy back; girl gets boy back. I'd love for the author to find a new prototype for her heroines. The writing style is good. The characters draw you in. But I want to read a different story.
