How It Works

TetraPond DHP pumps are engineered to circulate large volumes of pond water without clogging. This allows the pump to operate for long periods of time without any maintenance. Water, dirt, and debris are drawn through the quarter inch holes in the large pre-filter cage that surrounds the pump. The pre-filter cage prevents leaves, sticks, and other large debris from entering the pump. It also protects the fish from the pump’s impeller. The open-face impeller allows debris up to 1/4 in. in diameter to pass through the pump without clogging. The pond water with dirt and debris are pumped to an external filter for removal or directly to a waterfall or stream.

Flow Performance

Determine how high you waterfall will be from the pond surface. The higher the top of the waterfall is from the pond surfaces, the less flow will result. Take a look at the charts below for the approximate waterfall effect the DHP pumps will create at various pumping heights.

Pond Tips

Pond Circulation: Choose a pump that will circulate 100% of the pond volume in one or two hours. More circulation will result in better pond conditions.

Filters: Be aware that filters reduce the flow to waterfalls and streams. The image on the left shows water pumped at three feet without any filter restriction, while pumping at three feet with a TetraPond pressure filter reduces flow by about 45%.

We have a 1500 gallon pond that we've been just sort of winging it since we bought the house 4 years ago. The summers are hot in NC and the algea gets out of control. We also have a lot of trees dropping debri in the pond. We finally got in there and scooped a lot of the crap out which made the water very murky. We had a pump and filter combo from AquaSource that was so nasty to clean out. In the summertime we would have to clean it two or three times a week just to get the water to circulate through the pump. On a local Facebook group I asked what kind of pump I could use that would not get clogged up and everyone suggested the Tetra large debris pump with this the external tetra bio filter. The first couple days we were pretty disappointed that we didn't see much clarity. However, after 3 weeks the pond looks better than it's ever looked. We can actually see the pump and the bottom of the pond !! One thing to be mindful of is the attachment sizes of this unit are rather large (1 1/4 and 1 1/2). It's hard to find pond tubing that size locally And we also ended up having to buy a new waterfall box because our old waterfall box only had a 3/4 in max inlet. So if you end up going with this filter, I would definitely recommend buying your hosing and any other accessories you need online. We used the Tetra 2500 bio filter and so far it's been a great investment.

This pump does exactly what it advertises. I mated it to a Tetra Pond filter system and it fixed all my pond issues.

It's a well designed pump that has had zero clogging issues in the first 2 months of use. I attached it to a floating fountain head that the previous pump was clogging. This is stronger and has not clogged the head since installation.

Works as advertised. Much better than the old sump pumps we previously used. Had required no unclogging for weeks in a messy pond. Pumping rise is about 5-6 feet to waterfall. Once it got a small rock in the impeller. I cleared that jam and it worked again. Nice.
9/3/2021. The motor froze up, with water having gone through the shaft seal. It's done! I'll need a new pump. This one was trouble free while it was up and running, one jam up, easily cleared. It ran great for 3 seasons, rarely even shut it down. Decent pump for the money, but reading some other reviews, it seems that it's a gamble on how long the pump will last.

This pump moves some serious water !! A little overkill for my 500 gallon, but it does a beautiful job. Now I can even hear the water flowing down my waterfall all the way from my back door.
This is my 3rd pump in this pond and it is by far the most well made. It is rather heavy and a little larger than I expected. The weight isn’t necessarily a bad thing because it keeps it seated at the bottom of the pond.
I gave 4 stars instead of five because it didn’t come with any different fittings, only one large one (I believe it was 1 1/4 in) I ended up having to get all new tubing to my waterfall in order to fit the pump which was inconvenient. All other pumps I have ordered came with a few different size fittings, or even a universal one that you could cut to size, which was what I expected.
However, all in all a good purchase. I have had it about 2 months now and it is still going strong.

New entry: My earlier review was accurate. But I just ordered another of these pumps from Amazon, and it is an Amazon-fulfilled order.

1. It came without the required nozzle. I had to contact the mfgr to request one.

BUT 2...! Amazon fulfilled the order for one pump and it said free shipping, and THEN AMAZON PRIME CHARGED ME $107.91 FOR SHIPPING A $160 ITEM!!! NO WARNING, NOTHING! WTH????? I telephoned and some nice lady in India agreed to cancel the charge. But when I asked her to explain why the charge in the first place, she changed the subject .I repeated my question THREE TIMES and she just kept changing the subject. I am writing a letter to the CEO of Amazon to tell them just what I think about this little trick. I've had a good an busy relationship with Amazon for years--the this really squashed it!

I have six of these Tetra debris-handling pumps going in my several ponds, each with turtles and fish. Over the past 17 years, I have gone through many, many brands and sizes of pumps (Beckett, Little Giant, Mag pumps and others and found that most are prone to clogging or otherwise fail within two years. Most cannot be repaired and those that can be renewed with replacement magnetic rotors soon wear out altogether. Finally, I discovered the Tetra debris-handling pumps and have had excellent results.

I've been using the 3,000+ gallon and the 4,000+ gallon Tetras and am very satisfied. I've seen that they can collect a large amount of unpassable debris (leaves, twigs, etc. on the outside and still keep pumping.

The only problem I've had is when sand gets into the system. I had to dissemble the pump and clean it out (they give directions on doing this.) Thereafter, I placed the pumps in shallow plastic flower-pot dishes to keep them above the sand on the bottom. I highly recommend these pumps for the pond owner who needs to have debris removed. I make my own filters using large plastic drums filled with lava rock. One caution: If you have mosquito fish, small ones can get sucked into the pumps, along with all the junk that accumulates in a pond containing messy animals, such as turtles. Search for a good price for new units. I've found as much as a 40% price differential between vendors here.
