Product Description
For the first time on blu-ray and remastered DVD, Shinya Tsukamoto's cult classics have been digitally restored from their original negatives to be presented in high definition in this double-disc set featuring brand new exclusive extras as well as Shinya Tsukamoto's 'Tetsuo' prototype short-film 'The Adventures of Electric Rod Boy'
Tetsuo 1: A strange man known only as the "metal fetishist", who seems to have an insane compulsion to stick scrap metal into his body, is hit and possibly killed by a Japanese "salaryman", out for a drive with his girlfriend. The salaryman then notices that he is being slowly overtaken by some kind of disease that is turning his body into scrap metal, and that his nemesis is not in fact dead but is somehow masterminding and guiding his rage and frustration-fueled transformation.
Tetsuo 2: Body Hammer - Sequel to "Tetsou" this time has the Iron Man transforming into cyberkinetic gun when a gang of vicious skinheads kidnap his son. When the skinheads capture him, they begin to experiment on him...speeding up the mutative process!

Shin'ya Tsukamoto's decision to film in black and white was only one of many artistic choices culminating in a cult classic that still holds up over 25 years later. Unlike mediocre movies, it has the potential to haunt you a full two decades after watching it; you may not remember less important aspects such as plot, but you will certainly remember the transformation of Tetsuo. Long before Hollywood's Transformer or Iron Man flicks became mainstays at the multiplex, Tetsuo was both Iron Man and a Transformer.
👹
Tetsuo would work well as a silent film but for the fact that the soundtrack and audio effects are part of what makes The Iron Man so stunning. This was created in the relatively early days of Industrial music (e.g., Einstürzende Neubauten), and while nothing special today, it was very memorable in 1990. One can imagine how painstaking it must have been to do all of the stop motion animation in this work of art; it's doubtful that directors / producers would put in this much work today, given CGI.
👺
Beyond expectations, Body Hammer is a worthy sequel. Although I ordered this double feature Blu-ray from Amazon's UK site (since it cost about half the asking price on this site), it looks like prices here have dropped to below $20, which reasonable for a cult flick. Just be aware it's Region B: not the US standard for playback.

The aspect ratio on these films is presented in the original 4:3, which is a tad annoying as it doesn't fill up the screen and you get huge black bars on both sides, but after awhile you get used to it and you have to bear in mind that Tsukamoto used a specific camera so the ratio won't be in 16:9.
The films have never looked or sounded better. If you own a multi-channel amplifier you will really see the benefits of the outstanding industrial sound design and score, especially with Iron Man.
I've not yet looked into the extras, but the fact that both films are presented on one disc and the bonus content (which includes an interview with Tsukamoto as well as an early 44 minute film, as I didn't have the time as I watched both 1 and 2 back to back) means this is pretty much essential if you're a fan of Tetsuo and cyberpunk films and especially of director Tsukamoto himself.
Third Window Films have done an excellent job here. They seem to be the only noteworthy Blu Ray distributors around at the moment who release great Asian cinema (almost a take over from Tartan, who have sadly gone out of business). Arrow Video are also noteworthy as well as BFI, Optimum and Eureka. The rest seem to be re-releasing films already out on Blu Ray but in steel book editions or Hollywood crap like Iron Man 3 (the one with Robert Downey Jnr).
Third Window Films have also released a good share of another Japanese master director Sion Sono (Cold Fish, Love Exposure, Himizu and Land of Hope) as well as another film by Tsukamoto called Kotoko (his latest), which I also ordered, and Tokyo Fist get's a release in late November.
Here's hoping they'll release other classics by Tsukamoto like Bullet Ballet amongst others by him, as most seem to be hard to get hold of and are out of print.
As for both Tetsuo films, they really are a full on assault on the senses, especially Body Hammer, which works brilliantly as a full on audio visual experience, and it's utterly mind bending narrative sequel Body Hammer.
So if you're reading this review, which most likely means your a fan of Tetsuo, and you own a Blu Ray player, then go for it, you won't be disappointed.
The Blu-Ray is region B only, so people in the states may have to wait for a Blu-Ray distributor to release it over there.
I always like the wierd visual films if they give some good entertainment.
Iron man
Very wierd and being shot in black and white the gore looks so much better. There is less story in this one and is more cryptic and slow to give out what's going on. The special effects are brilliant with stop motion. Not much spoken throughout.
The body hammer
Is also wierd but the story is give much more direct and the reasons why are there. The film is in colour with a blue wash to make it feel colder and darker. There is more speaking and the plot is easy to follow.
This one is less bizarre than iron man but still crazy.
The soundtrack to both films is amazing. Pure industrial music that ads to the chaos.
Both films are really good but for different reasons. I did like iron man more but after watching body hammer again I can't choose now i like both the same now. Still to watch bullet man but hopes not high.
I've had the first Tetsuo on DVD for a long time, but it NEVER looked this good.
I picked this up mostly to own the sequel, as it had been almost 20 years since I'd seen it, and it holds up well due to the insanity of the practical effects, and the 16mm it was shot on.
It didn't work on my regular blu ray player, but it worked just fine in my region free one, so be aware before you purchase, as it is a region locked blu.
All that said, this is absolutely worth the purchase if you've got all region capabilities in your home.
Great price for the films, and good value for your bucks, this one.
Not for the casual viewer, but definitely a treasure for cult cinema fans.
