The shoes were very comfortable even over long tough hikes. The Galapagos is all lava rock, so the average trail is very tough, but these shoes were comfortable the whole way. Over very long walks on any terrain, these shoes were great.
Some people have reported a lack of arch support. I can't speak to that, as I have very flat arches and pronounced arch support generally bothers me.
The worst conditions we encountered was the muddy trail up Sierra Negra (volcano on Isabela island). At the end of that hike, I had to just throw away the pair of socks I wore, but I hosed my Tevas off in the shower, and they were good to go.
There are a couple of issues to know about with these shoes. First, they deal very well with water, but they don't dry out quickly. Even a solid night of sitting out will not dry these out after being submerged. The crew of our boat, would put them in the engine room at night and the heat there did dry them out, but be warned. They are water shoes, but that doesn't mean they dry quickly.
Second, the insoles in the shoes tend to come out easily and this can be annoying. It was the thing that made donning the shoes the hardest, and occasionally would cause the insole to wrinkle (which was unpleasant.) This is the main reason I took a star away.
Another point I will make is in dealing with sand. This shoe does NOT keep all sand out. There's just no way to do that. However, if you buy a set of Neoprene fin socks to wear with this shoe, you will have no problems at all. Sand does get in the shoe, but it doesn't get in the sock. The socks are waterproof as well, so jumping into the water is no problem. This combination worked wonderfully for me the whole time and I never had the slightest problem with my feet being irritated by sand or dirt even though I walked on beaches, through waves, and down streams in them. Get the socks and these are ideal.
The other point I will make is that the identical model shoe for women is NOT the same design. My wife got the Teva Churn for women and it was a substantially different design. That shoe has a cutout at the ankle which let in a great deal of sand. It was much more problematic for her. I wouldn't recommend the women's shoe based on her experience.
I wear a 10.5 in a street shoe and boots and ordered these water shoes in a size 11 along with the NRS thin neoprene water socks. With the socks on the shoes are a perfect fit for me.
First time with a shoe with the speed laces and I like them a lot. When hiking and crossing streams I will take off my hiking boots and put on sneakers for the wet rocks and then when back on dry ground I will switch back to the boots. Now instead of sneakers that take a day or two to dry out I have gone to the Teva water shoe which is a much better solution. These will also become my warm water kayaking shoe as will for my Hobie.
3/28/17 update: After a few years of use these shoes have held up pretty good, they however are now having some serious wear on the mesh along the side, rocks are getting stuck inside it now. I've taken these shoes down a 4 day low water kayak trick with lots of walking in rocks and they took a beat. For how little money I paid for these guys three years of solid use is a really good deal I feel. I'll be purchasing NSR Velocity shoes for more serious back country adventures, these are otherwise great for any other lighter water sports.
