About the Author
New York Times and USAToday bestselling Texas romance author of over 40 novels, including the popular TEXAS HEROES series, a five-time RITA finalist and RT BOOKReviews Career Achievement Award winner, Jean Brashear knows a lot about taking crazy chances. A lifelong avid reader, at the age of forty-five with no experience and no training, she decided to see if she could write a book. It was a wild leap that turned her whole life upside down, but she would tell you that though she’s never been more terrified, she’s never felt more exhilarated or more alive. She’s an ardent proponent of not putting off your dreams until that elusive ‘someday’—take that leap now.

There's nothing complicated about the plot and the characters are likeable. We get enough background to Maddie and Boothe that we actually cheer for them and want to follow their story.
Texas Secrets is well written, with a clear, no-nonsense plot, structure and writing style. A fun and sweet read.
To recap... Rising star chef Maddie Collins suddenly learned that her father's life was a lie, when she received a letter from a lawyer that she is now proud owner of a family home in Texas that she had never known... bequeathed by the husband of the only woman her father had ever loved, but had to give up. The catch is she had to stay there at least 30 days. After that it's hers, stay, sell, whatever. But the land the home was on... belongs to the two estranged sons of the same man, Sam Gallagher. Boone Gallagher was a former navy SEAL, but after injuries, he's just a cowboy driven away from home by his bitter father who turned on his sons after death of their mom Jenny. Boone had long lost touch with his brother Mitch. Now Boone is back, and was angry to find that his home now belongs to a city girl who obviously did not want the place, and he had to convince her to stay 30 days when they can't stand each other, for the alternative is for both of them to lose. As Maddie learned about the town of Morningstar and the less hectic but no less work ranch life, she found that this house was where her grandmother grew up, and her father's role in the struggle, and how Sam was now trying to repay the debts that can't be explained. As Boone and Maddie were forced to live with each other, they found that each was attracted to one another, and each was ready to do the other right even if it kills themselves... Is that love?
To explain the background there'd be spoilers ahead. Let's just say I had to make a map to keep all the relations clear, as these were revealed bit by bit. I very much enjoyed the book, but felt a lot of this background seems to be a bit wasted and angst-y.
Okay, the background goes like this: Maddie's father left town to take the blame of his mother (Maddie's grandma) killing her husband, but apparently before he left, he got Jenny, his girl, pregnant, but he didn't know. He left, and got a new name and a new life, new wife, and got Maddie. Back in town, Jenny gave birth to a girl, sent her into secret adoption, then came back and married Sam because her guy is gone or dead. And Sam was ashamed that he knew the guy's alive but hiding, and Jenny / Sam had the two kids, Boone and Mitch. When Jenny died, Sam turned super bitter and the two boys into bitter young adults. Now Sam's at his deathbed and to atone for his sins, his plan was to get Maddie to come back and match up with Boone, and hopefully they can find the other parts of their missing family. Is that any clearer now?
He was all, "My dad hated me and my brother, she needs to leave although I'm attracted to and like her, I don't want her to leave but it's better that she does or she'll resent me like the city girl my ex wife was. who cheated on me did, I want her, no I don't but I'm jealous when she's with the lawyer, they deserve each other *and catches a tantrum when he sees her hugging him and giving him a kiss on the cheek" and she was like " I'm leaving, no I'm not leaving, I should leave because he doesn't want me here and I can't take his hot and cold attitude".
The fact that they have a mystery sister in common was intrigueing and the fact that the male leads brother hasn't been found also holds my interest. I may just continue with the series.
Mattie is a free-spirit with a bright, easy smile and infectious laugh. She's optimistic, a dynamic chef, has a heart of gold but it has been shattered. First, her parent's are killed in a plane crash, then she walks away from NY - a place she put down roots - with friends she considered family, a partner & restaurant and finally she learns that her father had a secret past and family. Moving to TX might have been scary, but she owns a home there - thanks to Sam Gallagher - but she must live there with Boone Gallagher for 30 days.
Boone Gallagher is the youngest son of Sam Gallagher, has a chip on his shoulder, a heart full of pain and plenty of questions for his father that will never be answered since he's dead.
Once upon a time, the only place he called home, was bright, full of youthful love, laughter & happiness. All that was lost when Boone's mom, Jenny died. Boone was only 14. His father, Sam, drained the home until all that remained was darkness including the light in his two sons. His oldest son Mitch left and disappeared to the underground to not be heard or seen from again. Boone, was left to fend for himself as his father pushed him farther & farther away. Sam no longer cared for the ranch and made it clear his love was only for Jenny, the love of his life, taken way to soon.
Boone, stepped up to keep the ranch going at age 14 and after four years left it all behind for a new journey in the military. As a SEAL, he traveled the world, found a sense of family, focused on missions, knew a hundred ways to kill and lived in the darkness of his mind. He also married city-girl Helen. A marriage that was rocky and ended in divorce & disparity.
Getting notice that Sam died without saying goodbye was just another disappointment from his father. He returned to the ranch once again but this time there was a surprise, Mattie. Learning that Sam left his family home to a stranger and that she was the daughter of a man the community knew as a murder struck an arrow through Boone's heart. Worst of all, they had to live together for 30-days or forfeit the home to a family he hated. All he could do was count down the days and make sure she left when the time was done.
This is just a little background without giving away the details. You still get to read all the great romantic details of learning where Boo e & Mattie's family roots lie and generations of stories waiting to be told. The search for missing siblings and finding out the real truth about her father. Searching a dusty, hot attic for anything that might bring her closer to Rose, a grandmother she is just finding out about. Boone & Mattie, living under the same roof and trying to figure one another out. Cowboy versus City a Girl or is it?
Find out if the ranch house and its occupants continue to live in darkness or if they can leave the past behind, start fresh and bring a brightness inside.
