As a longtime Janet Dailey fan, I was pleased and surprised to discover the "Tylers of Texas" six book series, all of which have been published since she died in 2013. How is this possible? Did she write them before she died, or is someone else writing under her name? My research uncovered no answers.
Anyway, Texas Tough--the second book in the series--is just as good as the books in Janet Dailey's earlier western series, the Calder Saga. Texas Tough features a romance between a wealthy congressman's daughter (Lauren Prescott) and a handsome half-Comanche horse whisperer (Sky Fletcher) who works on the Tyler's sprawling Rimrock Ranch in Texas. It's lust at first sight between these two, but Lauren's father forbids any relationship between his only child and a half-Indian ranch hand. Lust won't be denied, though, and they soon get together for semi-steamy sex that gradually leads to love.
Their romance is enveloped by a gripping plot of greed, ambition and murder, as Lauren's father is sucked into a nefarious scheme that threatens to ruin his career. The evildoers in this book are women, one of whom is Sky's half-sister. I'll skip the plot details, because nothing should spoil this suspenseful page turner. It culminates with a terrifying range fire that threatens to destroy . . . well, enough said. I promised no spoilers.
There's a satisfying epilogue, but the evildoers are still on the loose and will doubtless wreak more havoc in other books. I hope they finally get the punishment they deserve. I especially enjoyed meeting all the members of the extended Tyler family, many of whom will also reappear in the series. But the unquestioned hero of this story is Sky Fletcher--a dark and brooding man with a sensitive, loving heart. I enthusiastically recommend Texas Tough and the entire Tylers of Texas series!
