How nice to discover a fictional novel by Mark Rathbun. I knew that it would not be dull. I had enjoyed some of Mr Rathbun's earlier writings, and found him to be a decent writer. I read Texas Tropics within a day and a half, and enjoyed it. The story was a great concept and it was well told.
The characters were well developed, and I wondered occasionally if some of the characters were meant to be metaphorical.
Most of the strong characters in Texas Tropics are male, and I had begun to wonder whether there would be any strong female characters introduced. At the last minute there was a female character named Margie who came in in a noble role. Ahhhh! I believe I actually exhaled in relief.
The development of the protagonist Lupe as a likeable guy leaves the possibility wide open for a sequel. At any rate, whether Lupe sees another novel or not I will certainly look forward to Mr Rathbun's next novel. He is a gifted storyteller. I think he has found a great beginning to what could be a wonderful run as a novelist. This type of book is unusual in that it is both entertaining and at the same time thought provoking.
I don't fish, and it almost made me want to go out fishing, just to experience the atmosphere that was so well described in the novel.
I haven't been down to the Texas Tropics, but it almost makes me want to go there...just to see.
Overall it was a great 1st novel and I optimistically look forward to many more! Thank you for writing this book!

Texas Tropics has an interesting plot and characters although I found "Lupe" the protagonist a bit mature in his thinking and actions for his age. I got the impression that Lupe was styled on how Rathbun sees himself, sure and confident, principled, fearless and David in the face of Goliath. Maybe I'm projecting but 17 year olds usually haven't developed those characteristics, so it read for me as a bit contrived. If Lupe had been mid 20's it would have read more authentic.
I enjoyed the descriptive writing about that part of Texas, and the fishing and metaphysical sub plots.
I found the concluding paragraph of the book a bit sappy.
Overall it was a good first effort at fiction. I'd read another if Rathbun continues.

By page seven you will be in another world. This book will be a great book to read 500 years from now, the stuff of classics. Something very poetic about the writing, as if you are reading prose. When I was done reading it, I wanted someone to read it to me. Jerry Bledsoe in particular, as his narrations on audio books are lullaby.
The author has a way of dragging your head around, so that you are in one place and suddenly in another. You are here, then there. And you find yourself in sudden shifts. A very unique style of writing, definitely a master story teller. You will not be able to get your head out of the book if you have to put it down. And once you put it down, the story and characters float in your head like a song you have come to love. You will be transported out of your space, and into a parallel universe. The author has a beautiful mind. I look forward to reading more of his books.

I shouldn't have been surprised and yet I was. Meaning?
Having read and followed Mark (AKA Marty) Rathbun's personal story through his other non-fiction/memoire books -- I wasn't sure he could keep me (an avid life time book reader -- fiction and very heavy dense philosophy/religious non-fiction work) interested and not frankly rolling my eyes at such *cheap* *obvious* philosophy pretending to be fiction.
Well -- yet again Mark turned another page in his own very interesting life, his journey and now his very obvious launch of a HOPEFULLY series of fiction novels ... with his wonderful characters, so well fleshed out.
And yes -- there ARE strong women. Not just strong men. Oh -- and one very wonderful dolphin.

A first foray into fiction by accomplished writer Mark Rathbun. In the interests of trasparency, I have known Marc for years and consider him a friend. Still, I found the story compelling because it reflects Mark's desire to see justice done no matter the situation. The blend of Zen/crackerbarrel philosophizing works well and the setting and narrative is fascinating since it is something I am not familiar with at all. The book could have used a copy editor but that did not really detract from my enjoyment. I hope he writes another one. It was a good first effort.

Loved the book. Kept me intrigued all the way. Loved the way useful philosophy was woven through. Having grown up in south Texas and spent lots of time in the Aransas Pass coastal area (yes, I’ve caught redfish), it was special fun for me. Also enjoyed getting some additional well ignored Texas history. I think it ought to be a movie.

I'm halfway through this book. It is a definite page turner! I don't know how a writer can create this excitement on the printed page. Interestingly, it even gave me some food for thought regarding my own personal philosophy of life. I don't think you will be disappointed.

This is a "soulful" crime thriller, if that makes sense. Wonderfully written and I couldn't put it down. Descriptive prose that paints beautiful, haunting pictures. You'll love it if you love that kind of writing!
