The characters were well developed, and I wondered occasionally if some of the characters were meant to be metaphorical.
Most of the strong characters in Texas Tropics are male, and I had begun to wonder whether there would be any strong female characters introduced. At the last minute there was a female character named Margie who came in in a noble role. Ahhhh! I believe I actually exhaled in relief.
The development of the protagonist Lupe as a likeable guy leaves the possibility wide open for a sequel. At any rate, whether Lupe sees another novel or not I will certainly look forward to Mr Rathbun's next novel. He is a gifted storyteller. I think he has found a great beginning to what could be a wonderful run as a novelist. This type of book is unusual in that it is both entertaining and at the same time thought provoking.
I don't fish, and it almost made me want to go out fishing, just to experience the atmosphere that was so well described in the novel.
I haven't been down to the Texas Tropics, but it almost makes me want to go there...just to see.
Overall it was a great 1st novel and I optimistically look forward to many more! Thank you for writing this book!
I enjoyed the descriptive writing about that part of Texas, and the fishing and metaphysical sub plots.
I found the concluding paragraph of the book a bit sappy.
Overall it was a good first effort at fiction. I'd read another if Rathbun continues.

The author has a way of dragging your head around, so that you are in one place and suddenly in another. You are here, then there. And you find yourself in sudden shifts. A very unique style of writing, definitely a master story teller. You will not be able to get your head out of the book if you have to put it down. And once you put it down, the story and characters float in your head like a song you have come to love. You will be transported out of your space, and into a parallel universe. The author has a beautiful mind. I look forward to reading more of his books.
Having read and followed Mark (AKA Marty) Rathbun's personal story through his other non-fiction/memoire books -- I wasn't sure he could keep me (an avid life time book reader -- fiction and very heavy dense philosophy/religious non-fiction work) interested and not frankly rolling my eyes at such *cheap* *obvious* philosophy pretending to be fiction.
Well -- yet again Mark turned another page in his own very interesting life, his journey and now his very obvious launch of a HOPEFULLY series of fiction novels ... with his wonderful characters, so well fleshed out.
And yes -- there ARE strong women. Not just strong men. Oh -- and one very wonderful dolphin.
