I received a copy of "Texas Wildflowers" when I was in middle school, in preparation for a class assignment to collect, identify and preserve a variety of Texas wildflowers. I have held on to my copy for the past 18 years, and it's still the best book for identifying Texas wildlflowers! The photos are superb, and the location and identifying information for each flower is informative and interesting.
My only complaint is the book isn't bound in a weatherproof binding so I can bring it along on my annual wildflower photography visits to Texas locales such as Lyndon B. Johnson State Historical Park; McKinney Falls State Park; Inks Lake State Park and Burnet, Texas.

This book has good coverage, small pictures next to the text, and reasonable descriptions. However it is arranged by scientific name so it will not be easy to use this to find the name of that pretty little yellow flower by the roadside. Look at "Wildflowers of Texas" by Geyata Ajilvsgi for a similar field guide but that is grouped by flower colors.

This guide helps Texans (and visitors to Texas) to identify the common and rare flowers seen along the roadsides and in the pastures, fields, and forests of the state. Also included among the pages are 381 full-color, close up photos and 370 species including a description of its appearance, range, habitat, and blooming season.

Texas is famous for its bluebonnets, and they are a sight to see in the spring! This book shows how many more lovely flowers decorate the state. My favorite is seeing red indian paint accenting a swath of bluebonnets. Stunning.

Get this book to learn the names of all the flowers.

The book is fairly complete, especially for central Texas, but is not easy to use. This photos are too small to be really useful for plant IDs; the descriptions, however, are quite good. Better choices are Marshall Enquist's "Wildflowers of the Texas Hill Country", and Ajilvsgi's "Wildflowers of Texas".

I've found with wildflower and bird books using more than one will usually get you what you're looking for. The book is organized alphabetically by the more current scientific family name with the common family name also provided. It's a little cumbersome since I'm not a botanist but it's still a very useful resource. There is an index of scientific names and common names. As is noted in the intro, common names vary. I've found the same flower in other books listed under different names so having the scientific index is very helpful. One picture is not always helpful in identifying a flower you see in the field so I use Wildflowers of Texas Field Guide (which is organized by flower color) along with this book and usually can find what I need. The pictures are great.

The biggest problem with this field guide is it's organization and it is much harder to use than the color coded Wildflowers of Texas. The photographs are not as good either.

This is on of the best books out for identifying Texas wildflowers. It's close to 300 pages, with excellent photos of flowers and very precise descriptions. Also tells you where, in the state, you can find ach flower listed. I highly recommend it.

This a very handy book to have for local and 'come from away' naturalists. It covers enough of the wild flora to give you and idea of what to expect, the months to expect the plants to bloom and the areas of Texas you can expect to find these plants. The coloured map of the vegetational areas is useful and I especialy appreciated the Glossary and the Illustrated Glossary. There is an area in the back of the book with space for field notes. A great resource to take in the field with you.
