Dr. Joseph Pizzorno, ND is a transformational leader in medicine. As founding president of Bastyr University in 1978, he coined the term “science-based natural medicine” which set the foundation for Bastyr to become the first accredited institution in this field anywhere in the world. This validated that medicine which promotes health rather than primarily disease treatment could be credibly taught, researched and practiced. As co-author of the Textbook of Natural Medicine (first edition 1985, 5th edition 2020) he helped established the scientific foundation for health promotion medicine. With over 100,000 copies sold in 4 languages (over half to MDs), it not only helped reestablish naturopathic medicine as an important part of the healthcare system, but also provided the scientific foundation for the transformational fields of integrative and functional medicine throughout the world.
A naturopathic physician (licensed in WA state since 1975), educator, researcher and expert spokesman, he is Editor-in-Chief of PubMed-indexed IMCJ, Board Chair of the Institute for Functional Medicine, founding board member of American Herbal Pharmacopeia, and a member of the science boards of the Hecht Foundation, Gateway for Cancer Research and Bioclinic Naturals. He was appointed by Presidents Clinton and Bush to 2 prestigious government commissions to advise the President and Congress on how to integrate natural medicine into the healthcare system. He is author or co-author of 6 textbooks for doctors (most recent Clinical Environmental Medicine) and 7 consumer books (Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine [>2 million copies in 6 languages]; most recent, The Toxin Solution).

- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2018Dr. Pizzorno and Dr. Murray have surpassed even their previous outstanding work. They reference 1000's of studies from standard medical and pharmacology journals, in order to substantiate the information presented.
As a reference work, it is indispensable. I rely on it frequently for excellent and comprehensive information.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2017I purchased this as a gift for an upcoming graduation for a medical student becoming an ND (naturopathic doctor). This was on her list of books that she wanted. What a great surprise this will be when she opens it as a new doctor. This is a very popular book and would be a great addition to your library
- Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2014Highly recommended.
It has a comprehensive approach for the therapeutic management from a healthier perspective. It is extremely full; I found impossible to detect topics on the web in its extent and accuracy. Furthermore each treatment has a summary of the research work done so far.
You can think of using a search engine on the web can lead to the same conclusions, but it is not. There is much information with no veracity in thousands of blogs and secondly Pubmed for example, provides data, but very briefly and often not even that.
The book is very large and heavy, made to be all the time on the desk and consult it.
An outstanding job from everyone in this project, and its visible face, doctor Pizorno.
Greetings from Buenos Aires.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2013I trust these authors. Their research is impeccable. I have owned a previous edition for several years. My frustration with this edition is that instead of putting all that information into two tomes, like my old edition, they packed all that information into one very heavy, tightly bound tome. It is physically difficult to deal with this book.Copying a page to hand out for patient information is physically impossible. Maybe that was their intention, but it devalues this book's usefulness for me.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2013Pizzorno & Murray have produced a magnificent reference work that is well written and logically organized. As a student in a nurse practitioner masters degree program, I find the book helpful as it provides a thoroughly referenced discussion of natural medicine in modern times. Bravo!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2014Good information for anyone into natural healing. Yes there are areas I don't agree with but other people have different ideas of what maks good medicine. It is not my place to discount those who believe that prayer, chants, or burning special herbs to call for a healing are wrong. We are made of so many different beliefs that who can says what will or will not work. This covers most medical beliefs quite well.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2014The previous edition in part saved my life. Learn what doctors dont know. When conventional medicine fails you this book will tell you what you need to do.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2015excellent source , very serious and solid information, It was my dream for 3 years ! :)
The text book is very helpful in my studies.

IvoryMReviewed in Canada on November 27, 20165.0 out of 5 stars A good book that tries to cover lots of topics
A bit expensive but a good overview on many natural therapies. I would say that this book can make you want to read more about each topic that it discuss. Also, based on my own experience, this book has mostly accurate information.
Worth it if you are a serious health researcher.
C. C.Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 6, 20165.0 out of 5 stars Quality work
Great book so far. I am looking forward to eventually have the hard version as this kind of study book is a little difficult to handle in a Kindle format. However the kindle format helps you study while away, the book would be bulky and to take in a luggage.
