Top customer reviews
One neat aspect of Texture is that you get a few different ways to browse your reading material. You have a library of personally selected magazines that interest you, a way to view magazines by category, and a "Highlights" section. The "Highlights" section has selected articles of interest from their entire catalog of magazines. I've really enjoyed browsing the articles they've highlighted. They also send lots of e-mails with interesting recommendations of what to read (you can unsubscribe if you have e-mail overwhelm!).
I read lots of reviews before buying and bought this with a lot of trepidation, but my experience has been entirely positive. One possible reason - I went to texture's website (not Amazon) for help when I thought I wasn't going to get my free Fire. I think Amazon is just facilitating payments. If you need customer service, go thru Texture and not Amazon. I've had no problems with the app - it works great.
' The Texture service intrigued me. Many of the titles I subscribe to in paper format, but since I'm on the go a lot and don't want to carry all those magainzes I thought this was a good option for me. Additionally my mother is sick with cancer and spends a lot of time in doctor's offices or in bed, and I thought it would be good to test drive this product for her use as many of the magazines (Good Housekeeping, All Recipes, People...) are titles she enjoys.
I was excited to view ALL the magazines Texture has to offer after going to the Texture website to view the availability. (Disappointed that Amazon had not listed them on their site, but by going to the company website at Texture dot com I was able to get most of the answers I needed prior to accepting Amazon's offer.)
' On the site I noted there are (2) tiers to Texture's service. The major difference between Premium and Basic is the ability to have unlimited access to the entire catalog of magazines with Premium. There are two tiers, but Amazon's offer is for the top one - Premium, which you can cancel in your Amazon Account in Digital Content at any time. It's also for 30 days versus only a 14 day trial on the Texture site.
THE APP: "iOS for Me"
I accepted the agreement to try Amazon's free 30 day trial and went through the checkout process. I made a Texture account login with password and downloaded the app on the AppStore for my iOS devices. It was all quick and easy.
' The app for iOS isn't the easiest to navigate although Texture does give you instructions when you use it for the first time in a tutorial format. I think it should get easier with use and my unfamiliarity with the format was much to blame. The magazines I tried (about 10 of them the first time I used it) all opened without an issue and the magazines were as expected in terms of clarity; with the ability to zoom in on my device.
' NOTE: There are three brief tutorial videos on the Texture website, in addition to USER GUIDES for Android, iOS and Windows - which are far more helpful than the videos!
' Things I couldn't do... crossword puzzles in the magazines, were no big deal for me, but would be for some. The interactive content made up for it in my opinion. I could jump to articles I wanted to view by simply touching on them in the magazine's index, which was unexpected, and really nice.
' I had no issues with the app in iOS freezing, but if I was downloading a magazine for offline viewing, it took more time than expected and often the screen would blur while it was doing so.
Overall, I'm very pleased with my decision to try out the Texture service and on iOS. The amount of content is the real selling point for me - back issues of all my favorites on one device. Despite this I'm not sure if I'll keep it when it's fifteen bucks a month though, unless they fix the issues with blurry images when downloading.
THE SERVICE & MAGAZINES
When I saw my favorite magazines on Texture's list of available titles, I was sold!
' People, Consumer Reports, Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, Time and National Geographic, and so much more! This app is a fantastic way to view current issues and back issues, and read them on or offline. Ideal for travelers, students or anyone who just wants less paper in their life.
' The fifteen dollar a month fee for this service that comes after the trial may be too much for some, especially if you're already subscribed to the ones you like because most of them have a digital option along with their subscription to the paper version. However, if your subscriptions are about to lapse, this is an awesome way to give yourself the whole newstand and keep it with you wherever you go!
' Fun. Informative. Interesting. Is it worth the fifteen dollars a month? Only if the apps get their bugs fixed for all platforms. The apps are the reason I give this 3-Stars. If the bugs are worked out and I don't get a blurry page when I try to download a magazine, or quickly turn pages...I'll update the rating with 4 or 5 stars.
