Editorial Reviews

Helmer Lee Sung-Gang's background is in animation, and he takes an iconic approach to tale of opaque young man (Kim Yoon-Tae), who bumps into a seemingly emotionless old g.f., now married, who agrees to sleep with him nine times -- for no given reason. Meanwhile, he's hung up on the spirit of a younger girl who used to live in his apartment. She, as seen in flashbacks, lived with a lad getting ready for a sex change. This "Skin" flick isn't always easy to follow, but there is something haunting about the situation. Important questions remain unanswered, and the actors -- although quite naked much of the time -- resist erotic viewing. Still, the spooky, intensely colored images, hinting at greater insights and presented with increasingly disconcerting rhythms, get under your you-know-what.

I assume by design, by the time I'd reached the end of the film, I wasn't really sure where the story was supposed to begin, and where it was supposed to end.

There are three very thin plot-lines supporting the movie: the love affair between the photographer Min-woo and Jae-hee; flashbacks/visions seen by Min-woo of the previous occupant of his new apartment; and the photographer's surveillance work with his brother, a journalist.

According to the description on IMDB, Jae-hee insists she will have sex with Min-woo only nine times. Unfortunately, while that seems like at least a slightly important plot point, that detail doesn't come through in the subtitles; we have only Min-woo asking "why nine times?" but no indication what the "nine times" refers to.

The Amazon description also makes detailed statements about the movie that, at least for those relying on the subtitles, are not apparent in the movie. Without giving too much away, by the end of the movie we do learn more about Jae-hee's own personal life, but it's never really clear what her relationship to Min-woo was, nor is any of this revealed initially.

In the end, possibly because of the language barrier and poor subtitling, and possibly because the director simply intended it this way, or perhaps a combination of both, the movie has very little forward motion in it. Instead it alternates between sex scenes and moody, ambient moments in the lives of the characters.

If you like a movie without a real story per se, but one that is more of a collage of emotions and situations, this one might be worth a look. If you're looking for plot, suspense, characters, etc. probably better to give it a pass.

"The appearance of profundity does not equate to its reality." This adage can well apply to the dramatically ghost-themed film TEXTURE OF SKIN. Director Sung-gang Lee tries mightily to create an overpowering sense of tension but succeeds only in creating an equally overpowering sense of distorted confusion. As the film begins, photographer Min-woo (Kim yun-Tae) witnesses a woman run out into the middle of a street only to be hit and killed by a car. She had been running from an assailant who then in turn runs away. The driver of the vehicle also takes off, leaving Min-woo to deal with the dead woman. Min-woo rents an apartment that oddly enough belonged to the victim of the hit and run. The landlord notes that the previous tenant had not yet removed her belongings. No surprise there, since she is dead. The problem that I had from this point on is that the relation that Min-woo has with his now-married ex-girlfriend Jae-hee (Kim Ju-Ryeong) has nothing to do with his relation to the ghost of the dead woman. Jae-hee tells Min-woo that she will have sex with him only nine times. Perhaps the number nine possesses some deeply symbolic or archetypal significance but that was lost on me. During one of their several explicitly graphic sexual encounters, Min-woo thinks he sees a "vision" of the dead woman. Perhaps he does but in a ghost story even visions should lead somewhere specific. Further, there is a confusing montage of flashbacks in which Min-woo remembers a previous relation with a woman who may (or may not) have some bearing on the dead woman. Other oddities abound. When Min-woo and his brother (Choi Moo-seong) are surreptitiously taking pictures from a rooftop, they hear a distant voice continuously shout "Hello.Read more ›

Not impressed, it seemed the story wasn't interesting.
The characters appeared cold, and way too predictable.
Check out another series.
