Of course all fish sauces are, well, fishy smelling. This has the characteristic odor of a fish sauce, but its flavor is more robust. Unlike many brands, which go too heavy on the salt, this fish sauce is not too salty and adds a wonderful depth of flavor to Southeast Asian dishes.
Overall, I highly recommend Squid brand fish sauce. It is an excellent quality fish sauce at a reasonable price. You'll welcome the flavor it brings to your favorite dishes.
Fish sauce is like soy sauce, but fishy, and may take some getting used to. If you're not used to cuisine that uses it, try mixing it 1:1 with soy sauce. BTW, lots of soy sauces contains wheat, so if you are avoiding wheat, try brands like San-J Tamari Gluten Free.
If you need to be low sodium, you won't have much luck with fish or soy sauce.
