About Thames & Kosmos
Thames & Kosmos was founded in 2001 with the mission of improving informal science education outside of the classroom by publishing high-quality science kits for children of all ages. T&K's mission has since expanded from its STEM roots to encompass other educational branches as well, including arts and crafts and the panoply of thinking and social skills that can be taught through games.
T&K places an emphasis on teaching concepts and skills through tactile processes. Our vision is to give all children access to real, physical activities and projects that teach them how things work.
Barbie STEM Kit (with Barbie scientist doll)
Science Saves the Day!
The Annual Animal Shelter Gala is just hours away! Help Barbie and Nikki prepare for the party as you learn important STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) skills.
A full-color storybook manual guides your journey as you explore physics and engineering. Construct 7 different models, including a spinning closet rack, washing machine, and greenhouse-all compatible with the Barbie Dreamhouse (sold separately). Then, conduct experiments to learn how and why your designs work!
Create three unique types of dresses for Barbie and Nikki—an optical illusion origami dress, chromatography dress, and leaf-print dress—while learning important lessons in biology and chemistry. Follow along with the story and discover ways to use science to solve problems!
- Ages 4-8
- 32-page illustrated storybook manual
- 7 models
- 10 experiments
- 100 reconfigurable building pieces
- Includes choice of Barbie or Nikki scientist doll
Build 7 models compatible with the Barbie Dreamhouse (sold separately)! Plastic building pieces fit together to create a spinning closet rack, jewelry holder, washing machine, hammock, shoe rack, greenhouse, and dress-design platform. Use the included adapter pieces to motorize the spinning closet rack when connected to the 'smart' furniture piece from your Barbie Dreamhouse (sold separately). As you construct the models, you'll learn important engineering skills and lessons in simple machines.
Through the experiments included in this kit, you'll explore biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, and art and design! Learn about optical illusions, capillary action, and photosynthesis as you create origami, chromatography, and leaf print dresses for Barbie and Nikki. Try out different ways to put the models together to see how changing the gear configurations affects the speed at which the gears turn.
The storybook-style manual provides an entertaining and engaging way to introduce children to scientific topics while having fun with Barbie. As Barbie and Nikki solve problems by building, making, and experimenting, kids can build, make, and experiment alongside them! Detailed step-by-step illustrated instructions guide kids through the building of each model and additional 'What's Happening?' sections further explain the science behind the experiments in clear and concise language. Examples of real-life applications encourage kids to think analytically about the world around them.
The kit comes with over 100 building pieces, including three colorful plastic sheets to decorate your creations, and adapter pieces to connect models to the 'smart' furniture piece in the Barbie Dreamhouse (sold separately). Also included is your choice of a Barbie or Nikki doll! The plastic building system is compatible with other Thames & Kosmos Construction, Engineering, and Physics kits--combine the pieces to create your own configurations limited only by your imagination!
What is STEM?
STEM is an acronym that stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. As with the humanities, including language, literature, art, and history, it is important for everyone to have at least a baseline education in STEM disciplines. Some people will choose to go on to study one or more of these fields in depth and pursue a STEM-related career. This kit helps lay the groundwork for a lifelong interest in and appreciation for STEM subjects!
Take your pick: the Barbie STEM Kit is also available with a Nikki scientist doll! Contents, experiments, and models, are the same for each kit.
Learn and play with the Barbie STEM Kit! Each kit comes with a 32-page, full-color storybook manual. Learn important engineering lessons as you build 7 models and conduct more than 10 science and art experiments. Models include a spinning dress rack, jewelry holder, hammock, washing machine, and rotating dress design platform, and are compatible with the Barbie Dream House. Create your own Barbie dresses using origami, chromatography, leaf-prints, and optical illusion patterns. 120+ pieces. Includes Barbie scientist doll. 12x12x2.5 in.; 1.5 lbs. She remains excited, because as the proud owner of the Barbie STEM kit she can:
- dye some dresses!
- build a shoe rack!
- play with her new Barbie accessory holder!
- save the best until last: make her own Barbie washing machine!
Huge missed opportunity to inspire an 8 year old. Instead, this feels like it was designed by Mike Pence.
I’m going to read all 200 Rebel Girl stories to her tonight in the hope I can pull her back out of the 1950s before it’s too late.
