Discover how fascinating the world is when you understand the remarkable reactions behind ordinary occurrences. CHEM C2000 includes everything in CHEM C1000 and more — with twice the tools and materials, and more than three times the experiments. Most notably, this kit introduces you to the alcohol burner for experiments that require heat, greatly expanding the number of experiments you can conduct. Experiment with filtering and separating mixtures, combustion, and electrochemical reactions. Learn how to work with indicators and stronger acids and bases. Explore elements and compounds, including the chemical and physical properties of water, carbon dioxide, oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon. Discover atoms and molecules. Inspect soaps and household cleaners. Experiment with various foods from the kitchen to learn about sugars, fats, and proteins. Investigate metals such as iron, copper, and aluminum. Learn about how chemistry is used in environmental protection and industry. After completing CHEM C2000, you will have experienced firsthand the most important topics in chemistry, creating an excellent foundation for later study of chemical equations and atomic structure. The 128-page, full-color manual guides aspiring young chemists through 250 experiments. The manual provides clear instructions for preparing and performing the experiments and explains the results. Thorough safety precautions and instructions ensure safe experimentation. Professional quality equipment helps you make the most of your chemistry experiments.

Chemistry Set. This set contains chemicals [and/or parts] that may be harmful if misused. Read cautions on individual containers [and in manual] carefully. Not to be used by children except under adult supervision.

OK, it's not the 70s anymore, and we don't trust kids -- even in the presence of adult supervision -- with the same sorts of items and materials that we once did; I've got that. One motivation for my purchasing this set was that it was the lowest-priced set I could find that included actual /glass/ test tubes and an alcohol lamp. All the less-expensive sets I've seen exclude those items, and aren't even worthy of the name "chemistry set" -- they're just toys. But really, for $150, I expected a lot more than what actually came in the box.
This set has a well-written manual that will take a dedicated youngster through the basics of chemisty. And it does include real test tubes and fire, both of which a reasonably intelligent 11 year old should be capable of handling safely, with occational adult input. The set even includes safety glasses, which is more than my ancient chemistry sets did.
On the other hand, the palate of chemicals provided is quite limited compared to the old chemistry sets. Also, a number of household items need to be added -- which would be OK, if there was a list provided somewhere, so that you could stock-up on what you needed before getting into the experiments. But overall, there just doesn't seem to be enough "stuff" provided with this set to justify the price. I know we're not paying 1970 prices anymore, but if this set had cost maybe $50-60 I would have given it a much higher rating. Now I know why I had to buy this online: if it had been on the shelves in a toy store, where people could actually heft the box and see details of the contents, I doubt very many would have been willing to shell out $150 for it.
Kids insterested in science will have fun with this -- for a while, until they use up the meager supply of chemicals provided. Seems like we could do better than this. This should be the C1000 set, and it should cost half (or less) of what it currently costs. Or, we could trust our kids a little more than we seem to, and include some more interesting items in the box.
We started with #23 and the first attempt had no results, the second one didn't work either, but the final try worked, but we had to use a tube from another set, to make this happen. So - there simply isn't enough in this set. For that kind of money... no. I wouldn't recommend this set at all. Also, the description in the book said to use 4 cm of water... what kind of measurement is that? Liquids are measured in ml, liter.... not length. Two spoons of this and that... there are two spoon sizes.. which one? So... it's confusing, and it really got frustrating. If you are beginning chemistry, this set is most certainly not for you. You can buy these things cheaper individually. And when I was reading through the experiments, you will need to supplement a lot of materials, e.g. candle, beaker, plastic tub, alcohol, 9V battery, plastic cups, iron nails. sugar, sand, salt, baking soda, coffee filters, cardboard, red ink, paper clip, file, steel wool, permanent marker, Hydrogen Peroxide, wooden splint, dry yeast, (and the list goes on... ). You need a lot of EXTRA stuff to make this work.
The guide has amazing pictures, environmentally safe disposal instructions, and lots of real world applications.
I didn't get the CHEM3000 because of cost, but this one has so much in it. My daughter won't even notice. All three of me kids love this set, but I do not leave them unsupervised. The alcohol burner is a very cool feature.
I would say this is an excellent set for those kids who are already interested in chemistry, because the very long manual takes you step-by-step through many many experiments, starting with the utterly simple (such as observing water when you dissolve sugar in it), and asks pertinent questions.
My 11yo son, on the other hand, is of the latter camp -- he thought a chemistry set would be cool because you could make interesting things happen -- like magic. We spent a couple of hours and started on page 1 of the manual, and it was very difficult to keep him interested. He really wanted to jump ahead and find something interesting, whereas after more than an hour of reading we were doing little more than boiling water. In fact, we didn't actually boil the water because the set didn't include the alcohol needed for the burner.
I also knocked off a star because the set doesn't include many of the materials you'll need, and there doesn't seem to be any single page in the manual where you can find a list of what you need to buy or where to find it.
Clearly, this set has been well thought out by people who know what they're doing -- the manual is very detailed, full of important and interesting information. The authors are experts in their field, and if your child is a budding scientist, then I suspect they might love this set and learn quite a lot. I would only take off half of a star due to the missing supplies you need to hunt down on your own.
But for the kid who expects a chemistry set to be similar to a magic kit, and doesn't have a *lot* of patience, this is probably not the right product for that kid.
The same manufacturer offers a smaller kit, the C1000, which might be a better choice for some people.

In one way there's very little for your £90-£100 when you look at what there is in the box.
However it will take a kid a few days to progress through all the experiments safely so it might be a small price to pay for keeping the nipper absorbed.
The early experiments are a bit...yawn but it livens up towards the end.
The problem is when you have used up some core chemicals. When they're gone, they're gone. After a while it's a bit like having spotted-dick without the custard. Spare ingredients are thankfully available from various sources however but getting Dad open his wallet for the kid to burn, melt or blow up more cash into the atmosphere may prove tricky.
