The four-button, multi-channel remote control unit allows up to four motors to be used at the same time in the same space (additional motors sold separately). To control a model, set the motor unit and the remote to the same channel (1-4) to enable them to communicate. One set of buttons on the IR remote control unit drives the car forward and backward. The other set of buttons controls the car's steering.
The kit includes an innovative gearbox that houses a car's gear train, or transmission. The gear train has four gears that can be easily repositioned to achieve five different gear ratios to quickly optimize for speed or torque. For example, your race car model will need a gear ratio that allows for high speed and low torque, while your buggy model will need a transmission that allows for high torque and low speed. The instructions for each model tells you which gear configuration to use.
With the 260 pieces in this kit, you can build 10 different RC cars: a high-speed race car, off-road buggy, go-kart, pickup truck, electric car, dragster, hot hatchback, semi-trailer truck, super car, and hot rod. Cool looking auto body plates give your models a realistic appearance, and decals allow you to customize your cars.
The kit comes with 260 building pieces, including the adjustable gearbox, IR steering motor box, four-channel IR remote control unit, four-channel battery box, and decals to decorate your models. The plastic building system is compatible with other Thames & Kosmos Construction, Engineering, and Physics kits--combine the pieces to create your own configurations limited only by your imagination.

The instructions were mostly just pictures with small lines showing where the part gets inserted. There are lots of holes in these beams so it is easy for the child to choose the wrong hole if they are not careful. A little guidance will help the child to be more detail oriented to be successful. There are 3 motors and can be inserted backwards easily. I would suggest that the parent add an arrow as to the direction the motor turns using a marking pen to help the child get it right. In particular the 2nd car has two motors that need to turn in the same direction. Although an interesting exercise is to intentionally reverse one motor and notice how much more difficult it is to control the car (ergonomics training). A few more detailed pictures would have helped the child get the project built the first time but the parent can certainly help with the repair and successful conclusion if needed. This kit shows a lot of mechanical skills. Some of the more complex projects can be a bit wobbly but overall they are pretty solid. One problem is that the battery box has no power switch so you have to remove a battery when not using the toy to avoid running down the batteries quickly. LED's on the battery box and remote would have been nice to indicate they are on (there is a switch on the remote).
As far as constructing the models, he was able to assemble the "easy" models alone & the "hard" models with minimal adult oversight. Some of the "hard" models are complex in areas & the directions can be difficult to follow for a young child but very good directions overall. The book also gives info about the different models & how they apply to actual space exploration which he loved.
Overall, worth the $60ish we paid for it. The development of fine motor skills to put the small parts together combined with learning to read 3D illustrations while building cool space designs makes this product both educational & captivating. If your child loves the building part & won't be frustrated by having to "rebuild" to keep it functioning, its well worth it.
