Editorial Reviews
The Duke Ellington Legacy is a 9-piece group featuring Duke Ellington's first-born grandson and namesake, Edward Kennedy Ellington II, guitar; Norman Simmons, piano & chief arranger, Nancy Reed, vocalist; Virginia Mayhew, tenor saxophonist/arranger. Thank You Uncle Edward, the band's debut CD, features 10 compositions from the Duke Ellington songbook, in new arrangements by Norman Simmons, with special guests Joe Temperley on baritone saxophone and bass clarinet and Wycliffe Gordon on trombone. This is the only Ellington band now in existence that features a vocalist, the wonderful Nancy Reed.
The Ellington Legacy takes a fresh look at Ellingtonia. Our goal is 'to further jazz of all types and bring the music to people who have always enjoyed jazz, as well students and new listeners.'

The balance of the CD is commensurate; there's not a clunker here, and even the most sophisticated listeners will be at pains to distinguish between the Duke Ellington Legacy outfit and any of the best jazz big bands out there.
