travel the gamut of human experience. An orphan is reunited by chance with those who cared
from him in his earliest days; a daughter receives a huge expression of love from her usually
taciturn father; a five-year-old reaches across the decades and comforts an elderly man grieving
for his mother.
Reading through the book I wondered, HOW does he have all these extraordinary life experiences?
Then I realized that it wasn't that the experiences were coming solely to Bob Alpert, but that he pays
attention to life, and thus finds them wherever he goes. Sometimes you wonder where he's going
with a story -- how does a story that begins with an infant screaming on an airplane end up
as a story about a dog in church?
Because this stand-up comedian began his professional life as a rabbi these incongruous plot
pairings are often linked by a teaching. In the case of the screaming infant air traveler and
the church-going dog it was a quote by psychologist Daniel Goleman, "We all have the power to make
each other feel better or worse."
With Thanks, I Needed That. , Bob Alper makes his readers feel better, never worse. A powerful gift.
This is a funny, heart-touching set of memories from an extremely empathic, warm, understanding individual. This book is recommended to everybody who has ever laughed or cried at the human situation.
