I can't believe two years has passed since reading That Boy and That Wedding but the wait was finally over. I was finally getting That Baby. As I started reading it's like there was no wait. I felt the love for my favorite characters instantly. I can't believe how easily it was to pick right back up with the gang. They reeled me back in and I couldn't put the book down. My heart was so happy to find out the JJ was pregnant and was taking us along for the journey. It's like experiencing your best friends pregnancy but at a much deeper level.
Just as the sunshine and unicorns were prancing all over your happy place the freaking tornado comes in and rips them away. I had to stop and breathe. Was I reading the words correctly? Did tragedy just strike my best friend? I was sobbing. I am not talking those little tears that sometimes escape when you are caught up in an emotional read. These tears were hard and fast. I turned and looked at my husband and said "I need therapy because of this damn book". He laughed at me. Seriously...he laughed. This is not a playing matter. I was GUTTED. But wait...something interesting happens.... GO READ THIS BOOK NOW. You will not regret it.
The reason why this book isn't getting five stars is because of what happened to Lori, it is still a mystery to me why such a likable character would suddenly do a 180 and completely alter her personality. By the second half of the book she was awful and there was no real explanation for it. Something more serious was going on with her, but it is never explored or explained. She suddenly at the very end bursts into tears and tells Danny that she is sorry and will apologize to Jayden. But we never actually see the apology happen and by the epilogue, which goes several years into the future, all relationships are healed but you can't understand why. Danny goes from wanting a divorce and falling in love with someone else to accepting Lori's apology and then a jump 10 years later where they are living happily ever after. I didn't buy it or that everyone easily forgave Lori for her actions and moved on seamlessly, if they did we should have at least seen it or gotten some explanation of its occurrence, and we got neither. During the course of this part of the story, Danny made some really key points of why he was interested in Lori at first and what was lacking in their relationship later on after they married. I really thought they were going to end up divorced and it would have made sense. In the end, I definitely felt like Danny and Lori didn't belong together. It was a definite flaw in this story which is the reason for the four stars but not enough to deter my interest in reading it and finding out about Jayden and Phillip's happily ever after.
Beyond the issue with Lori, I was engaged in Jayden and Phillip's relationship and their wait for their baby. Some definite funny moments, e.g., the gnome, and some also very poignant and heartfelt moments, e.g. their letters to their unborn baby. What I like the most about Jayden and Phillip's relationship is that they are flawed but likable characters and the portrayal was realistic. You can love each other to death but still have disagreements or really be frustrated with one another. I liked that the author didn't go with some unrealistic situation where there is a misunderstanding that leads to an abrupt break up with no explanation and then they don't talk again for months or years. Here they have problems that come up but they work through them which is what happens in a real relationship and I found that refreshing to read.
I loved the book, laughed, cried, terrified of gnomes. I HATE Lori. I cannot look at her the same way and wish Danny did end that relationship. I wanted to stab her with a spork, make her hurt because she is a selfish bitch. Like serious. I want to cun* punch her. Grrrr. As a woman who has had 14 pregnancies and only 2 children (one healthy, one disabled child) this dedication and you opening up to us was heartaching. I've been there. I hurt. I felt the pain of losing a child so many times that it makes me so angry at the world.
Loved the names. Loved JJ and how she never changed. Loved how sweet Phillip was through it all. I love this story so much
