EDIT: I just reread this thriller by Lisa Black to refresh my memory before I read #2 in the series UNPUNISHED which is coming out January 31, 2017. I liked it just as much the second time around, maybe even more, because I changed it from a four star read to a five star. I'm really looking forward to the next book.
THAT DARKNESS is the first book in a new series by author Lisa Black. As I've written before, I'm not a huge fan of series books but the storyline in this thriller was quite different and I will look forward to reading more about Gardiner and Renner.
Maggie Gardiner is a civilian criminalist for the Cleveland Police Department. She is kind of a jack-of-all-trades, working crime scenes, checking out fingerprints, running trace evidence, checking blood and DNA samples. Cleveland PD doesn't have a huge budget and besides, she doesn't really mind doing all this variety of work.
Jack Renner is a Homicide Detective for Cleveland PD...and he happens to be a tad bit more too. He has a low tolerance for certain types of criminals and has a heavy dose of vengeance running through his veins.
Gardiner and Renner are different from other characters I've read about lately. Author Black describes them carefully with a keen eye to detail.
And the author handled the philosophical questions brought up during this tale very well.
Be aware that this story is about dead bodies, the coroner's office and more so don't be surprised or offended that there are blood and guts in the book.
