Let me start with this—If you are seeking an immediate need to a troubling problem, here are two numbers: the National Parent Helpline is 855-4 A Parent (855 427 2736); and, the Domestic Violence Hotline is 800-799 SAFE (3224). These numbers were found toward the end special advisory sections of this book.

This book is an excellent holistic approach for the parent trying to yell at their kids less. The advice in IS THAT ME YELLING feels similar to a book I read last year called IF I HAVE TO TELL YOU ONE MORE TIME. That’s a good thing. Sometimes, reading older parenting books leaves me confused with contradictory pieces of advice, but most of what I’m reading today sings the same notes.

Here’s some of what’s similar: spend one-on-one time with your children; help coach siblings to work out their problems; seek natural and logical consequences; use “when, then” statements; use “I, you” statements. Some of the new things include meditation and awareness training and self-shame. I was especially pleased to see the author’s references to Jon Kabat-Zinn and Brené Brown.

That’s what really separate IS THAT ME YELLING from other counterparts: the generous attributions the author uses throughout. If she shares an idea, she’s humble enough to share the book the idea was sourced from. You’ll walk away with excellent advice, as well as a plethora of further reading.

The author mixes in personal stories with her advice. She also creates her own A-B-C-D-E response approach (ask, breathe, calm yourself, decide what your child needs, empathize) and her four C’s (communication, choices, consequences, connection). She also encourages parents to keep a journal and track their yelling, trying to figure out the cause to address.

Honestly, I did not think I needed this book. An intentional parent, I've worked hard to develop a strong parent skillset that feels right. So when I had the opportunity to read this book, I was not expecting for it to really influence my parenting. But it did. The day after reading it, I had an interaction with my preschooler that was transformed because of this book. And that transformation took hold and has stayed with us since that day.

Rona's humble and supportive voice makes this book so accessible and easy to read. If you appreciate feeling supported in your parenting, you will be happy to have this book - real practicality and heart rolled into one.

No one wants to admit they yell at their kids--especially for all to see on Amazon--but hey, you reach your limit sometimes. And you're a hot-tempered Italian American gal, and call it a cop out, but you got yelled at when you were a kid too.

It's so incredibly validating to even see a book on this shameful--and important--subject. And Nurse Rona is so exceptionally equipped to address the issue with parenting expertise, and no judgement.

BUY THIS BOOK. I mean, I don't mean to yell--but reading it will boost your awareness about the situation. It will allow you to accept that yes, this is unsavory, and sometimes happens in your family. And once you accept that, you can start doing something about it.

I love the way this book is organized. I love the friendly accessible tone of the writing. I love the anecdotes about other parents who have found themselves in similar situations to me.

Parenting is difficult business, but having guidance from folks like Nurse Rona makes the road much more easy to navigate.

Oh, and buy it for your book club or your mama friends. I bought it for someone and they hugged me!

I came to this book with a little prejudice, as I believe(d) (and sometimes still slip back to thinking) that there are times that yelling is appropriate, "deserved," and/or effective. My thinking on this has shifted as a result of reading this book. I think I have become more conscious of the impact of my yelling, not just on my kids and my spouse, but on myself. The book has helped me to think about my values as a parent. Sometimes I have trouble remembering to be soft and tender, rather than just getting through life. The yelling I do is really a symptom of other things, especially stress. One way I express my best self is to not yell.

I definitely recommend the book, and its author (who teaches accompanying classes) to any parent.

Oh the yelling; I am guilty of the yelling! I never thought I would be the "type" to yell at my kids but then, none of us really go into parenting thinking we will be anything less than perfect! We never think we're going to be that parent. Time passes, kids get older and the parenting gets harder. Before we even know how it happened, we're yellers. I saw this book Is That Me Yelling and cringed at the guilt. But when I saw the sub text of A Parents Guide to Getting Your Kids to Cooperate Without Losing Your Cool, I knew I had to read this one!

The reason this book is so helpful is that it really gets to the source of the problem. Unless you can identify certain things like why you are really yelling and HOW to stop, you aren't going to be able to change. While I really wanted Renner to get straight to the point and tell me how to stop, she starts where she should; at the beginning.

We all grew up differently and chances are if you grew up in a household of yelling, you are going to yell. We do what we know regardless of what we want to do.

I learned a lot about myself while reading this book and while some things I knew on a subconscious level, I hadn't really processed them enough to realize how they affect me and my parenting. One thing I learned is that I really tend to have displaced anger towards my kids. Most of my yelling has more to do with me than it has to do with them and I'm sure that's confusing to them. If I'm stressed out and having a bad day, I yell at things I wouldn't typically yell at. My kids don't know what to expect from me because it can change based on MY mood.

I also learned a lot about temperament.
