Editorial Reviews

"The intricacies of each character's personality and their unique stories will keep you involved until the end. The pages sizzle with heat and at the same time swirl with mystery and suspense. This book is more than just a love story with a HEA!" ~Twin Sisters Rockin' Book Reviews
"I haven't read anything this exciting in a long time, I tend to play it safe with certain books but this one, full of angst, sterling writing and marvellous character creations, the side players were just as complex and endearing as the main protagonists." ~Nic's Novel Idea

Overall Rating: 4.5 Rockin’ ★★★★☆
In this innovative story by author Tess Oliver, she deals with social issues that dominate today’s society and addresses then in a unique way. Ms. Oliver creates situations for her characters that are original and ground-breaking when addressing these issues. We have a group of friends that cover a broad spectrum of personalities and addictions. This is Tommy and Sugar’s story and the journey that they embark on to find their freedom through self-forgiveness and love.

We are introduced to Tommy Jameson first, a bad boy with an addiction and that finds himself incarcerated due to his uncontrollable temper. He is his families’ heir and is a big disappointment to them. Tommy is given no choice other than to enter a rehabilitation center or face jail time. At twenty-five you would think he would have his life under control but his susceptibility to drugs and his uncontrollable rage leaves no other option for him, except rehab. During his stay he meets Sugar and Julian, two other patients with addiction problems. Tommy recognizes Sugar as his forever love, yet with his problems does not feel worthy of her.

Sugar Scarborough is a lost girl in a woman’s body. Her loveless life and feelings of unworthiness has led her down a path of drugs and promiscuity. She is a giver and everyone loves her with the exception of her mother, the person she needs to love and support her. When she is admitted to Green Willow Recovery Center, she meets Julian Fitzpatrick who is almost considered a life resident and Tommy Jameson. They form a strange friendship and support system with each other. Julian is her friend and sounding board while Tommy is something else altogether.

This was quite different than any other Tess Oliver book I've read. It centers around three characters: Tommy, Sugar and Julian (Jules).

The book is entirely in Tommy's POV. The setting is a rehab/mental illness facility, and Tommy's there because of drug/alcohol problems and anger issues. His temper is pretty scary, but he has a soft spot where Jules is concerned and a massive crush on Sugar. About 40% into the book, it takes a turn toward the macabre and it turns into a road trip/on the lam situation. And for me, the book wasn't as good after that point.

Sugar is one of those unicorn type characters, everyone she encounters thinks she's magical. Pure sunshine. But she also did a lot of stupid things and put the three of them in danger more than once. I really found it hard to like her character, especially since her backstory was only hinted at instead of explained.

Jules was easily the character I had the most empathy for. He seemed to have some form of autism or mental illness, and he easily had the worst family situation.

This is the kind of story you can't think about too hard while reading, there are too many questions that pop up: How is their money stretching this far? Why aren't more people looking for them? How does no one recognize them? How does that yellow car keep finding them when the police can't? WHY ARE THEY PLAYING POOL IN A BAR WHEN THEY'RE RUNNING FROM THE LAW?

Then the end comes, everything wraps up so quickly, and nothing gets fully explained (especially concerning the murders). After all that running, it felt like a letdown. The potential was there, the end product just fell short.

That Time with Sugar by Tess Oliver is a book that really surprised me. It is always a great story when I read Tess's books, but this one was a little bit different and it really hit home. This is a book about what happens when three friends living together are put in a life threatening situation.

Tommy Jameson is 25 years old and the heir to his father's fortune. He is in this rehab facility to learn to take care of his anger and for drinking issues. While there he falls hard and fast for Sugar Scarborough, who is in there for other issues, and she is always helping anyone who needs it, as a matter of fact she has a need to help everyone. Then there is Julian Fitzpatrick, a heavily sedated at all times and socially dysfunctional genius that lives in his own little world of trying to escape mentally from where they all stay at the Green Willow Recovery Center, where his father put him and forgot about him.

These three are friends and try to get through the day to day hopelessness of living there together. Just when they thought things could get no worse, a discovery is made about Julian that is mind blowing and causes people to be killed and all three of them to be in mortal danger. Together these 3 young adults have to leave this place and fend for themselves before they become the next target. While going from one town to the next hiding and usually getting there by walking, even more problems develop, especially when they go to Julian's house and watch as his father hands a killer a wad of money! So they are back to square one and fending for themselves while trying to hide. I do not want to say anything else- this book is so shocking as each piece of the mystery is revealed, and you will not believe it!
