Editorial Reviews

World renowned conductor and arranger John Wilson leads an all-star cast of singers and his Grammy ® Award-nominated
orchestra, comprised of some of the UK s finest musicians, on this dazzling recording of some of the best-loved songs from
Hollywood s Golden Age: That s Entertainment: A Celebration of the MGM Film Musical. Most of the scores have been
lovingly and painstakingly reconstructed by Wilson, as MGM destroyed the originals in 1969. This is the first time the songs,
including Singin in the Rain, Steppin Out with My Baby, The Trolley Song, and title track That s Entertainment, have
been recorded in their intended orchestration since the films original soundtrack recordings.
That s Entertainment: A Celebration of the MGM Film Musical captures The John Wilson Orchestra s record-smashing
2009 BBC Prom concert, which catapulted the 96-member band to stardom and won the hearts of the public. With guest
performers Kim Criswell, Matthew Ford, Sarah Fox, Seth MacFarlane and Curtis Stigers, the concert was watched by over
four million people. This recording captures the joie de vivre of the live experience.
Composer, arranger and conductor John Wilson is one of the world s leading experts on the music of Hollywood and
Broadway s Golden Age. In addition to his touring with his own orchestra, he has worked closely with Sir Paul McCartney,
and also arranged and conducted the music for the Kevin Spacey film Beyond the Sea.
The Deluxe Edition features MGM Film Musical poster artwork, extensive liner notes and exclusive session photos in a
beautiful casebound, hardcover book. Along with the CD, the Deluxe Edition comes with a DVD containing music videos, a
John Wilson featurette on reconstructing the lost MGM Film Musical scores, behind the scenes footage of the recording, as
well as five karaoke videos to celebrate the John Wilson Orchestra experience.
The DVD, That s Entertainment: A Celebration of Classic MGM Musicals DVD, captures the spectacular 2009 BBC Prom
concert live experience. Live from The Royal Albert Hall, watch as Clive Anderson introduces the sensational concert that
celebrated 75 years of classics MGM Film musical. This unique live performance is one to remember.

All music of the musical film era. The best of any genre'. The overture can't be beat. MGM knew what it was doing when the musicals were produced. Now the trash in motion pictures needs to be protested against. However, the kids like it and what do we get but trash talk set to three beats at the most. This album worth the cost.

Gifted my parents and sister with the DVD & CD of this wonderful MGM musicals concert performed at Royal Albert Hall in London a few years ago that I never saw on PBS TV. John Wilson is a genius conductor and arranger bringing back the sound via his amazing orchestra of the old MGM movie musicals. Even bette is that I went to the College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati with one of the fantastic soloists - Kim Criswell, who is a famous musical theater performer in England. Also, the brilliant Seth McFarland, creator and the voices of Family Guy and American Dad cartoons is so multi-talented since he also has a wonderful voice! Can't wait to seem him host the Oscars Feb. 2013 since he can do it all!
The DVD is two hours long but unfortunatly the CD only offers half the musical numbers as the DVD. I've preordered another John Wilson musicals CD coming out in Feb. and am wondering if it's the numbers left off the first CD from this concert or from another concert that was performed since it appears there is not a second DVD being issued.
This DVD and CD make a wonderful gift to yourself, any music theater lovers and to older family members who would remember when the MGM musicals first came out.

First of all John Wilson and company put a great deal of effort in reconstucting the scores of the music on this album. The John Wilson Orchestra perform the music as well as any studio or pops orchestra anywhere. I disagree that this is a third rate recording, the sound is just fine to me, and there is much to enjoy here. I can only hope that there will be a few more albums like this one comming from this orchestra in the years to come. I notice that their next album will feature the music of Rogers and Hammerstein as heard in the movies. I envy all the folks who have gotten to see John Wilson and his Orchestra at the Proms the past few seasons, I could wish that BBC America would show the Proms here in the U.S., but at least we can listen to this album and imagine ourselves there for a few minutes while enjoying this recording.

Painstaking reconstruction of these scores has paid off. Leave it to a Brit to make such a strong move to preserve American musicals.

I love the voice of Seth MacFarlane but don't generally care for the music he sings as usually the tempo is too slow or the music is obscure and not really what I want to hear. I'm a huge fan of Cole Porter and this rendition of Well Did You Evah really is wonderful.

Don't be confused by the identical cover art on this CD and the DVD of the 2009 Proms performance. This CD offers not the live audio track taken from the concert, but rather a studio recording of the same material presented in the exact same arrangements with the pretty much the same singers and performers. While I can understand that the audience noise and the vocal high jinks of the singers during the 2009 concert wouldn't have worked on CD, there is that extra bit of "sparkle" missing here. Still, the performance can hardly be faulted.

The problem I have with this release is the poor recording. There is an unpleasant "midrangey" balance to the presentation, with a low-resolution digital harshness (noticeable especially in the strings) that was commonly heard in the earliest digital recordings. Why am I hearing this in a 2011 recording? There is some compression, although it's not too severe. But in loud complex sections, the sound becomes shrill and congested. The engineers must have employed every microphone within 500 miles and taxed the capabilities of several mixing boards during production of this recording. The resulting overmixed recording has no sense of "air" or stereo soundstage. It's just a flat wall of unfocused noise. Often recordings that are not "audiophile" quality (and this one most certainly is NOT) will sound horrible on high-end equipment but passable on low-end stereos - such as in the car. This one sounds awful both on my home system and in the car. It is fatiguing and unlistenable at anything past background ambience level.

In short this is a 5-star performance, let down by a 1-star recording. What a shame.

Then you'll probably love this. The arrangements aren't exactly true to how presented in the movies (for example, a few were much faster tempo than original), so don't expect slavish copying (get the soundtracks for that), but overall the CD provides great re-interpretations of classic, beloved songs.

This is a wonderful reminder of the old movie musicals of the 1940s and 1950s. Listening to it is a joy. The singers are wonderful and the dance music is terrific. But add to that the fact that the original orchestrations have been lost/discarded. John Wilson has painstakingly recreated many of these orchestrations just by listening to the original films. Just amazing.
