The DVD is two hours long but unfortunatly the CD only offers half the musical numbers as the DVD. I've preordered another John Wilson musicals CD coming out in Feb. and am wondering if it's the numbers left off the first CD from this concert or from another concert that was performed since it appears there is not a second DVD being issued.
This DVD and CD make a wonderful gift to yourself, any music theater lovers and to older family members who would remember when the MGM musicals first came out.
The problem I have with this release is the poor recording. There is an unpleasant "midrangey" balance to the presentation, with a low-resolution digital harshness (noticeable especially in the strings) that was commonly heard in the earliest digital recordings. Why am I hearing this in a 2011 recording? There is some compression, although it's not too severe. But in loud complex sections, the sound becomes shrill and congested. The engineers must have employed every microphone within 500 miles and taxed the capabilities of several mixing boards during production of this recording. The resulting overmixed recording has no sense of "air" or stereo soundstage. It's just a flat wall of unfocused noise. Often recordings that are not "audiophile" quality (and this one most certainly is NOT) will sound horrible on high-end equipment but passable on low-end stereos - such as in the car. This one sounds awful both on my home system and in the car. It is fatiguing and unlistenable at anything past background ambience level.
In short this is a 5-star performance, let down by a 1-star recording. What a shame.
