Hank Williams Jr deserves a thorough career-spanning single-disc anthology. Unfortunately, THAT'S HOW THEY DO IT IN DIXIE: THE ESSENTIAL COLLECTION ain't it.

Don't get me wrong. Williams is one of the great outlaw country artists. I first got hooked on his mid-Eighties albums like BORN TO BOOGIE and MONTANA CAFE.

What ESSENTIAL COLLECTION does is cherry pick a handful of tracks from GREATEST HITS, Vol. 1-3 (all still in print) and then adds two new tracks: The title track (which features Big & Rich, Gretchen Wilson, and Van Zant) and "Stirrin' It Up." There are just too many missing tracks to qualify this as "essential." At only 12 tracks and a little over 40 minutes, fans deserve more than this before spending their hard-earned money. A better purchase (although more expensive) is Curb's 2000 excellent 3-CD set THE BOCEPHUS BOX. At 65 tracks, it certainly provides more bang for your buck.

O.K. Maybe they should have left off "The Essential Collection", and just kept the main title. But, if you count all of the hits ole Bocephus has had in the past. It would be down right impossible to fit them all on 1 CD (unless it's an MP3 format). If you did we would be calling it a boxset...Not, The Essentials. Being a longtime member of the Hank Williams Jr Fan Club, this collection of past hits compliments this CD. Along with the two new recordings titled, "That's How They Do It In Dixie" with a little help from his newest country friends Big & Rich, a very talented Gretchen Wilson and Van Zant. The second entry, "Stirrin' It Up" Is not too shabby in it's own right. Myself I woulda like to have seen "If The South Woulda Won" and "If It Will, It Will" added to this collection. But, the hits that appear on this one is good enough. Like old ThunderHead Hawkins would say "I Ain't Going Peacefully".

Great Album! I'm a rocker, but I haven't heard anything worth listening to from any Hard Rock or Metal bands, so I decided to check out some country music. I decided to start with a hell raiser, so it seemed appropriate to start with Hank Jr. I really enjoyed these tunes, especially the duet with his father!

If you like Hank Williams Jr, then you should by this album.
That's How They Do It In Dixie-The Essential Collection is a bunch of Hank's number one hits.
What made it extra nice, Amazon had a free album...($5.00)a few days back,
and that is what I bought this album with.

This is a great collection of Hank Jr. that I determined was a "must have" for my collection! to make it a "Perfect Collection", I would make it a 16 song collection and add O.D.'d in Denver, Orange Blossom Special, Lawyers/guns and Money, and Hank wouldn't have done that way! So for the price of the 12 songs I do give it 5 star rating. I do wish it was a 16 song collection and maybe charge a few extra bucks.
Bottom line for this is if you grew up in the 70's early 80's with Hank Jr. music, then I would qualify it at a must have.
Cause a Country Boy can and will Survive!!

Hank Williams Jr. is one of the absolute giants of Country Music, and this CD is one of the best collections of his music that I have heard. It contains a lot of excellent tunes, including A Country Boy Can Survive, Family Tradition, and If Heaven Ain't A Lot Like Dixie. But, my absolutely favorite track is There's A Tear In My Beer, which is him singing along with his father. It's got a great sound, and sometimes I just listen to it over and over again. (I know, it's a well he can't return to, so there will never be another one like it, but I sure wish there was!)

This is a great CD, one that is sure to please any fan of that great Country Music sound! I really like this album, and I don't hesitate to recommend it.

It seems the Hank Jr sound gets better as the years pass. His music is about enjoying being alive and having fun. He is a great country sound that seems to get better every year. This CD is what I remember Hank Jr for. Brings back many fond memories of his powerful country sound. If You like Hank Jr you will like this song collection.

I love country music and have lots of favorite singers, but Hank Jr. is one of my favorites of favorites, if not my very favorite. I enjoy his music, not only because of his talent, but because of the material he sings about. He sings a lot of songs about the country and having fun. Those types of songs are the types I love the most. Of all Hank's songs, "Country State of Mind" is my favorite, and it is on this CD. The song is about being in the country and fishing - it reminds me of my teen days when I fished on the creekbank in the hot ole summer sun.

This CD also has "A Country State of Mind", another one of my favorite songs, and it is about the country!

"All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight" and "There's a Tear In My Beer" (with Hank Sr.) are also my favorites.

Hank Jr.'s songs are the type of country that I will never stop listening to.
