That's a Lie is book two in the Promises, Promises series by Victoria Klahr. After reading That's a Promise I was in awe of the awesomenesss that is Victoria Khlar. Her debut novel seriously impressed me and I didn't know that she would top it. I thought I loved TAP but I loved TAL even more. I will tell you that from page one of TAP i was TeamBlake. And even after that ending, I was still TeamBlake.

TAL picks up right where TAP left off, and after the whopper of a cliffhanger I was eager to dive in. I kept waiting for Blake to come back and realize that he made a mistake. But during all that waiting, it was Seth who started to take residence in my heart. For that I have to commend Victoria. I am pretty stubborn, and i don't want to say that I completely switched teams, but for the author to make me feel for someone other than "my" team says a lot about her writing ability. I found myself growing more disgusted by Blake's actions and swooning harder for Seth than I thought possible. Don't get me wrong, I am still hanging on to smidge of hope that Blake will resurface and have his HEA with Josie, but by the end of the book I found myself realizing that Seth was really her soulmate.

Josie and Seth have both been through so much. My emotions were all over the place with this book. I hurt for the them and i laughed with them. Again, another testament to the writing ability of Klahr. She has a way with words that makes you feel like you are right there with them. While Josie still grated on my nerves a few times, I was pleasantly surprised with her character development in this book. I think she has come a long way.

Klahr left me with me a smile on my face and a happy heart with the last chapter. I might have even gone back and read it a few more times.

After losing her best friend, her boyfriend and her daddy all in one year, Josie manages to pick up the broken pieces of her heart and keep moving. She has to keep herself together and stay strong so her dad won't fall apart. But when Seth returns and professes his love for her, Josie feels unworthy of his love and pushes him away again. This time Seth won't take no for an answer and vows to fight for Josie no matter how hard the battle will be. With Blake still hanging in the shadows, and another secret that will soon be revealed, Seth will have to choose between fight or flight.

This book was a little slow and definitely not as good as the first one. Again, Josie's indecision was annoying. As a plus, Seth is back and there were a lot of steamy scenes between them. I think this series should have ended with this book and although there was another cliffhanger ending, I don't think that I'll move on to book 3.

Favorite Quotes:

We'll go slowly. Keep coming back to me. Let me show you that you're my other half... Let me prove to you that I can love you the way you deserve.

And please for the love of baby Santa, fix your damn hair and makeup. You look like you've been attacked by bears all night.

I've been yours since I was six years old... I've just been too scared to admit it.

I'll love you forever, Pussycat. I'll love you when I'm dead and gone. I'll love you when through every life I live after this one. I'll love you every second I have left to live, and I won't regret one single moment of loving you. I'll choose you over and over again, because I can't and won't get over this feeling.

My Review:

While not as angsty as the first book in the series, Ms. Klahr's writing for That's a Lie remained emotive, evocative, alluring, and seductive. The story was insightfully penned in my favorite form with a dual POV. Even when I became frustrated with her characters, I was reluctant to put my kindle down. I adore Seth Montgomery! I reveled in the second half of this book, which more than atoned for the uneasiness and irritation I experienced during Josie's self-destructive, vile, and cruel behavior toward Seth during the first half. Josie was heinous toward sweet Seth in her efforts to push him away, and I grew increasingly annoyed with her stubborn and churlish behavior. The storyline finally turned to a more positive and nurturing bond for the two and I couldn't have been more relieved, and then the writing took on a heady and salacious sensuality that had me gasping and my beloved kindle steaming over. Oh my, if the characters in this book were actual people, they would be in a constant state of exhaustion and dehydration.

When Seth left in That's a Promise (the first in this series), I thought "good riddance." But when he returned in That's a Lie, he turned up the heat...to an inferno! I thought I wanted Josie with Blake. I even wrote an entire blog post about why she should choose him. And then Seth showed the error of my ways and convinced me that he was Josie's soul mate, her true love, her hero. Seth was super sexy and he loves Josie the way every woman wants to be loved. He helped Josie to be sexy, but he took it to the next level pushing her to release her inner slut, and face it, every woman has the slut inside of her. And while Josie was finding herself and her heart, Blake turned out to be a total disappointment. Not just a disappointment, but a grade A, first class, JERK! How could I have been so wrong about him? Seth will melt your heart, especially when he tells Josie, "You're my chocolate!" (That will make so much more sense once you read it.) Victoria Klahr, you earned 5 stars, if for not other reason than you made me want to read the final chapter twice!!
