That's So Raven ~ Soundtrack
Amazon.com
Disney has come to dominate the next-gen practice of pasting crowd pleasers into its soundtracks, and so it goes with Raven. Which, in this case, was a particularly wise move. Raven's contributions to these songs "from and inspired by" her tween-targeted TV show are fine, but don't go much farther. So instead of bumping the star's first two thumping, pop-slick tracks against Cheryl Lynn's disco classic "To Be Real," this disc's producers inserted a warm-up: Jesse McCartney's "Beautiful Soul" serves as a pleasant-enough buffer between manufactured music and the real, rip-roaring deal. Later, Des'ree's sophisticated "You Gotta Be" offsets Jump5's frantic futzing about on its cover of "We Are Family," continuing the high-low split. Sliced in are straight-outta-Kidz Bop anthems "Ultimate" and "There's Gotta Be (More to Life)," but ultimately we're returned to Raven, who holds her own but has reason to feel self-conscious about singing, for the second time, a song called "Supernatural" (a nod to her TV character's psychic gifts, but still). If the music scores a collective B minus, the package gets an A for extras: A bonus DVD has four Raven music videos, and the CD also works as a "special message" CD-ROM. --Tammy La Gorce

Raven is a great role model for children, and the music on this CD is appropriate for kids to listen to.
1)Supernatural-Raven(5/5)This is Raven at her best! Her vocals are amazing and the song goes great with the show, the video's awesome too!! My favorite on the whole CD!
2)Shine-Raven(3/5)This is not my favorite Raven song. The beat is very annoying and it sometimes gives me a headache. I've tried really hard to like this song but I just can't. But her incredible vocals earn this song 3 stars.
3)Beautiful Soul-Jesse McCartney(4/5)I have a lot of respect for Jesse. His voice has really matured since DreamStreet and this song is very catchy. Check out his song on Disneymania 2, its even better!
4)Got to be real-I'm gonna skip this, never listened to it yet, sorry!
5)More to Life-Stacie Orrico(5/5)This song is very good and has an inspiring message to it. This song never gets old in my opinion. Check out her CD, its great!
6)We are Family-Jump5(5/5)My second fave on the CD! I love J5, I think they have incredible talent and this is the best cover song I've heard in a long time!
7)Superstar-Jamelia(sp?)(5/5)One of my faves! This song is so darn catchy, I sing it all the time! Her vocals aren't the best but she pulls it off good!
8)Ultimate-Lindsay Lohan(4/5)Lindsay Lohan is a great actress, and a great singer too. This song has a rock beat and the guitar is awesome. If you want more of Lindsay, check out the "Drama Queen" soundtrack.
9)You Gotta Be-Des'ree(4/5)This is an older song, but we've all heard it and we all love it!! Great song!
10)I'm Every Woman-Chaka Kahn(3/5)Don't really listen much, but still pretty good, goes great with the show.
11)Where You Belong-Hukapoo(3.5/5)I'm not quite sure whether i hate this song or if I love this song. Pretty catchy, but these girls are lacking a little bit of vocal talent. It's OK.
12)Jungle Boogie-Kool & The Gang(3/5)Who doesnt love this song. Although it is good, its usually a skip for me.
13)Future Is Clear-Jeannie Ortega(5/5)Love it!!! Great song, with very catchy lyrics(altough not the best). Her husky voice works perfectly with the music, also goes great with the show.
14)That's so Raven-Raven(5/5)In my opinion, this is the best theme song ever! I love that the three main cast members were able to contribute something! Very catchy!!!!!!
15)Supernatural(Crystalball Mix-Raven(3/5)Love the original, not so sure about this remix. Its not terribly bad though, just kinda weird, like a bunch of annoying video game sounds.
BONUS DVD:
This soundtrack also comes with a bonus DVD featuring 4 Raven Music Videos. All of which are all pretty cheap, as all disney videos are! Let's take a look:
1)That's so Raven(3.5/5)Not sure. I meant the video is good but I'm not feeling the remix, although it is a little longer. Its ok but I prefer the original better.
2)Superstition(The Haunted Mansion)(5/5)-One of her best! This video is awesome!! Her vocals are incredible and she looks amazing! Plus there is no annoying movie clips every 5 seconds! Very good remake.
3)Grazin in the Grass(Lion King 1 1/2)(5/5)-My favorite Raven song ever!!! This is one the funnest songs you'll ever hear and the video makes me smile every time I see it. I was very glad to be able to own this!
4)True to your Heart(DisneyMania 2)(3/5)-Umm..its ok. I never really loved this song but its started to grow on me, but her voice sounds different to me. This is another one of those disney videos where all it is is the singer singing the song in the recording studio. Gets boring.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
If you bought and enjoyed this soundtrack and DVD and would like to hear more of Raven then check out Raven's 1999 album "Undeniable" and "The Cheetah Girls" CD. BTW, Superstition and Grazin in the Grass are both available on the newly released "Mega Movie Mix" which features other artists on here as well.
As for the future of That's so Raven, you can expect books,DVDs, and a Game Boy Advance game out this fall! Also be on the lookout for Raven's new solo album out this fall as well! Thanx for reading, bye!!!
SUPERNATURAL- LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT. The reason I bought this. I'm shocked this song didn't make it on regular radio-enormously better than "Backflip"-better than anything on Raven's solo album, in fact. This is an INCREDIBLE pop-dance song with an infectious beat and a beautiful violin breakdown in the middle. One of the better pop songs I've heard in my lifetime. (5/5)
SHINE- I wasn't too thrilled with this one. After a blow-away opening track, I was expecting a little more from the second song. Kind of annoying, repetitive and generic. (3/5)
BEAUTIFUL SOUL- He has a nice voice, but....I refuse to enjoy any kind of music from Aaron Carter/Dream Street/Stevie whatever/Jesse McCartney and the like. Just another kid who got into the business because of his looks. Nice message and somewhat catchy beat, though. Better than "Shine." (3/5)
GOT TO BE REAL- I sort of like this one. Cool disco beat! A bit slow, though. I can't REALLY get into this. (3/5)
(THERE'S GOTTA BE) MORE TO LIFE- This one's pretty good. She has a nice voice. Cute little beat, but...something's missing. (4/5)
WE ARE FAMILY- Ah, the Disney-influenced cover. A trend I'm really not too impressed with so far. And yet....this is the exception. I like the way they made it a bit rock-influenced instead of all poppy like most teen covers. I like it better than the original-but that's not saying much, because I wasn't too thrilled with the original, either. (4/5)
SUPERSTAR- I want to like it....cool beat...but once again, something's missing. Not perfect. But okay. (4/5)
ULTIMATE- Quite possibly the second-best song here! AWESOME rock-out song. Lindsay Lohan doesn't have that fantastic of a voice, and I was really disappointed in her when I saw her whore it up in the "Rumors" video, but I love this song. Her best one to date. (5/5)
YOU GOTTA BE- I was so shocked when I heard this on here!! I was so happy! It really brought back memories. I remember hearing this all the time on the radio when I was younger. It's awesome to have it on a CD now! A bit slow and not perfect, but very beautiful song. Plus it's a tad nostalgic for me. (5/5)
I'M EVERY WOMAN- Wooooah this is disco. I don't really like this one that much. It's not horrible, though. I like parts of it. (3/5)
WHERE YOU BELONG- I like the part in the chorus where she says, "Where you belong"....but it makes me feel like they could have made a better melody with/after that line. (3/5)
JUNGLE BOOGIE- Disco fever!! A lot of old songs on here. Sorta fun. But I've never been a huge fan of disco. Hee, hee....funny song, though. Gets you in a partying mood. (3/5)
FUTURE IS CLEAR- This is another one where I feel it could have been incredible but something went wrong; something's missing. Still a good song, though. (4/5)
THAT'S SO RAVEN- Great song. Not as good as the other 5s here, but still good. It's way too short. Not even a minute long. I thought the soundtrack would have used the extended version. (5/5)
SUPERNATURAL (CRYSTAL BALL REMIX)- Not quite as good as the original, but I LOVE the part where they put the beginning effect and the violin breakdown together. Still great. (5/5)
OVERALL SCORE: 53/75
All in all, this is a MUST-HAVE for fans of That's So Raven-or good pop/rock/dance/disco music in general. For a CD, this is good. For a soundtrack, this is stunning! A lot of really good songs here, and not a single wholly bad track. This album is so underrated. Plus, it is WAY better than Raven's solo album. The fact that it has a dirt-cheap price tag and a bonus DVD only add to the enjoyment. You even get four of Raven's music videos. It would have been perfect if the "Supernatural" video were included, but sadly it isn't. All of the videos are good, and this is likely one of the few soundtracks out there that you can truly sit there and listen to quite a few times. Enjoy!
