Product Description

Maxwell Street Kings pay homage to the early days of Chicago Blues, to a time when the open air market on Maxwell Street rang with the blues sound of street musicians; when musical giants like Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Hound Dog Taylor, Little Walter, Elmore James, and JB Hutto could be heard in steamy clubs on the city's south and west sides; and when the Chicago Blues of Chess Records ruled the air waves. Maxwell Street Kings capture the spirit of that era when Chicago Blues were raw, primal, and oh so vital.

Review

It's the subtle nuances that make this record nothing short of exquisite. For one thing, Rick Kreher, who co-produced the album, is credited with being the last guitar player in the Muddy Waters Band. His leads give John a place to space on slide guitar. You can hear shades of Muddy on the title cut, Elmore James on Taylor Street Boogie and Hound Dog on Low Down Woman. For another thing, John is an amazingly versatile harp player. Artists like Sonny Boy Williamson gave the instrument the nickname 'Mississippi saxophone,' but John's playing turns it into a 'Chicago saxophone.' (This) masterfully captures the slow grind and cry-for-help wail of Chicago blues, and on this, Studebaker John's first release for the label and arguably his best yet, John, along with Kreher and Cushing, settles into a groove here. His songs are seductive, sleazy, and slowly sensual. --Don Wilcock, Blues Revue.com, January 2011

For every facially-contorted string bender, it sometimes feels like there's a performer who knows the blues on another level; with this release, Studebaker John Grimaldi is one of them. He takes his cues from the Chicago blues in general and from the likes of J.B. Hutto and Hound Dog Taylor in particular. He lives and breathes the primitive sophistication of those artists and the evidence of it is all over this disc... --Nic Jones, All About Jazz

John, a veteran bluesman with many albums under his belt, gets down with harmonica and guitar solos that every blues lover will feel right down to their guts. No frills or fillers here, just music. With such energy coming from this trio, you will get the thrill of feeling that you were actually in the Maxwell Street market. --Robin Murray, Elmore Magazine, March/April 2011
