This series is based on a true story of a child whose Munchausen by Proxy mother tries to her sick and waif-like in order to gain sympathy and donations. But as the girl ages into young adulthood she rebels and the scheme falls tragically apart. There is lots to think about in terms of the behavior of the characters: Why does the mother behave like she does? Why doesn't the daughter try harder to escape? Why don't doctors and social services take a firmer hand? The writing and acting is excellent, you really buy into the story.
This production is an absolutely bone-chilling dramatization of extreme child abuse and manipulation of government and charitable organizations. It's a tragedy on many levels. Very well produced but often hard to watch.
