Very dissapointed. The price was right but I could not get the item to load on either of my computers. I have windows XP and windows 7.
If this item won't work on these computers I should have been told.I think the item was used.

This program has messed up my computer. If I try to open it, a warning message pops up, and if I override it, the audio doesn't work.

Comments
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
* I have been using this program for years even on Windows 7 & 8 without the CD and I love it. It is fast with not Bloatware. I wish I could update the dictionary, it is a little dated.
Let me tell you how to install it and run it from the hard drive without the CD. Installation must be done manually. You must be experience in Windows Explorer (File management).
Notes & Assumptions
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
* Know this program dates back to Window 3.1
* This is a 16 bit program
* It still uses 8.3 file format
* These Direction are based on install program to the "C" Drive
* The help file (AHD4.HLP) is no longer supported in Windows 7 & 8. You need a update to Windows to use this file. See
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917607/en-us

Procedures
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
* Create a directories on the C drive
C:\Prog-16B\AHEDW
* Copy (Program) the Folder from the CD to the Hard drive
* From CD
..\AHEDW95\*.* {include the folders}
* To HardDrive
C:\Prog-16B\AHEDW
* To Create a Start Menu Folder and shortcuts. Remember, to edit the Start menu, it is located at (Note it is a hidden folder):
“C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs”
* The items you might want to create short for are:
Help file ---- C:\Prog-16b\AHEDW\AHD4.HLP
Program --- C:\Prog-16b\AHEDW\AHD4.EXE
* Run the Program (C:\Prog-16b\AHEDW\AHD4.EXE) for each user. You will get an error message, ignore it and start the program.
* After you run the program (for each user), to correct the above error (Location of the Picture, Voice, and Sound folders). You need to edit the registry while you are logined in for each user. The best way to do this is from the command prompt. Run the following three commands
REG ADD "HKCU\Software\SoftKey\The American Heritage Dictionary\Picture" /v Path /t REG_SZ /d C:\Prog-16b\AHEDW\pictures /f
REG ADD "HKCU\Software\SoftKey\The American Heritage Dictionary\Sound" /v Path /t REG_SZ /d C:\Prog-16b\AHEDW\voice /f
REG ADD "HKCU\Software\SoftKey\The American Heritage Dictionary\Video" /v Path /t REG_SZ /d C:\Prog-16b\AHEDW\Video /f
Hope this help. If I have not made any typos, it should work.
This is indeed a wonderful program, but it doesn't seem to be compatible with 64-bit PCs. I assume that "Math-Physics Prof" is successfully running it under Windows 7 because it's on a 32-bit machine. I'm *really* going to miss this program.
Great product. Worked up to Windows 95, but doesn't work on Windows 7 64-bit.
