About the Author

James O'Reilly, publisher of Travelers’ Tales, and Larry Habegger, executive editor, have worked as series editors on more than 125 Travelers’ Tales/Solas House titles, winning many awards for excellence. Larry also writes a syndicated newspaper column, "World Travel Watch," which has appeared nationwide since 1985. James and Larry live with their families in the San Francisco Bay Area. Sean O’Reilly is coeditor of many Travelers' Tales books and the author of How to Manage Your DICK: Redirect Sexual Energy and Discover Your More Enlightened, Evolved Self.

Introduction author Tim Cahill is one of America's foremost travel and adventure writers.     Marcia DeSanctis spent two decades as a news producer for ABC, NBC, 60 Minutes, and the Barbara Walters Specials. A Contributing Writer to Travel + Leisure, she also is a frequent contributor to Vogue, Town & Country, Air Mail, BBC, and has also written for Marie Claire, Departures, Tin House, Creative Nonfiction, O the Oprah Magazine, Roads & Kingdoms, The New York Times and The New York Times Magazine. She has won five Lowell Thomas Awards for excellence in travel journalism, including one for Travel Journalist of the Year, for her essays from Rwanda, France, and Russia, as well as the Solas grand prize in 2021 for the best travel story of the year. She holds a degree from Princeton University in Slavic Languages and Literature and a Master's in international relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.     Author Conner Gorry has spent decades writing guidebooks for Lonely Planet, (Cuba included), reporting from post-disaster situations, and covering Cuban life from the inside for a variety of international publications. She first visited Cuba in 1993 and has been permanently based and officially accredited as a journalist in Havana since 2002 where she reports on everything from clinical trials to questionable fashion.

    She has written several books about Cuba and founded the island’s only English-language bookstore/cafe, Cuba Libro, in 2013; most of her explorations for her recent book, 100 Places in Cuba Every Woman Should Go (2018; Traveler’s Tales), were made on a 1946 Harley-Davidson, leading one observer to say: ‘Conner’s Cuba is where Shakespeare and Company meets Easy Rider.” Indeed, she has traveled nearly 5,000 miles across the island on two wheels – necessary field research for her book Cuban Harleys, Mi Amor, (2014; Backroad Diaries) with photographs by Max Cucchi.

    She writes about contemporary life in Cuba on her blog Here is Havana (www.hereishavana.com) and recently published her first collection of prose, poetry and rants TWATC.

This is, quite simply, the best writing in the English-speaking world today. That it's travel writing is beside the point. Its bite-size chapters make it ideal bedtime, commuter-train, or plane-ride reading. Each story is a fresh emotional adventure. I've been teaching these Travelers' Tales anthologies in my literature classes for years.
