Claire Cooper grew up in a small village in south Wales before moving to London as a student. She graduated with a degree in Ancient History and Egyptology and spent seven months as a development worker in Nepal. On her return to Britain she joined the civil service, where she worked for 17 years on topics ranging from housing support to flooding. She hung up her bowler hat when she discovered that she much preferred writing about psychotic killers to Ministerial speeches. She lives in London with her husband.

This book had a very slow start for me. The only reason I kept reading was because others in my book club raved about this book. I am so glad I didn’t put the book down! Before long, it was very hard to put this book down. It holds your attention, right to the very end. I do wish we got to check in with the characters at the end and learn how everyone ended up, but I’ll hope for a sequel. In the meantime, I highly recommend checking out his book!

Well what can I say? Clever, clever, clever. Loved it.
I bought the paperback from Amazon after reading the blurb which intrigued me and happened to notice that quite a few reviews (which I don't normally read before I've made my own mind up) were not that positive. More intrigue....
The book was sooo tense. Edge of the seat reading. I always fancied staying in a small village in the Cotswolds...well not anymore! The setting was perfect for the story. Creepy, really creepy. I loved the characters, they were all so weird. A book club is formed, a small group of neighbours and an 'incomer' complete the members. Lucy has not lived long in the village herself but she welcomed the 'incomer' with open arms, so did everyone else. Cosy eh? How neighbourly, how friendly....how blind!
Dark and menacing. I could see exactly what was going on but couldn't do a darn thing about it apart from turn the page again, again and again, wondering how evil someone would get. Who amongst them could murder? And who already has?
This is terrific story telling and had me glued to my chair throughout. Top marks.

Well it’s a good job I only spent 99p on this drivel. I was lured by the 8 outstanding reviews, clearly given by family and friends, promising a complex and thrilling read. To be fair the plot may well have been intricate as it unravelled but the appalling style of writing meant me slamming shut my kindle cover in less than 30% of the book and I really couldn’t care less what happened after that. I cannot abide trashily written gossip-girl rubbish no matter how good a plot may eventually turn out to be. So because of that this is rapidly heading towards my ‘delete from all devices’ box.

The concept behind this novel by writer CJ Cooper is strong and original. It tells that story of a group of people who come together in a book club via a newcomer to their village, Alice who systematically exposes their secrets vicariously through the various books they communally dissect during their monthly sessions of Merlot, nibbles and gossip. The tone reminded me of a cosey Cotswolds Agatha Raisin type mystery (but without the murders). Do not expect cutting literacy criticism from our little group as the limit of their observations are along the lines of, "Tess of the d'urbervilles has far fewer pages than Jane Eyre" and debates over whether paper books are better than electronic devices. The linking of the books with the character flaws of each of our book club members is well done though and although this is not the "absolutely gripping psychological thriller full of twists" that the blurb describes, it is a promising debut.

Alice is a woman on a mission to right wrongs done to her & woe betide anyone who gets in her way.
Life in a nice quiet little village will never be the same now that Alice has arrived.
Would highly recommend this book. It's just brilliant.

On the surface, in a small village in the Cotswolds, everything looks normal but, underneath there are secrets- extra marital affairs, grief over an abortion, male prostitution. Then Alice moves in and subtly uncovers the secrets. She starts a book club and the books chosen have as their subjects the things people are trying to hide. Alice is aiming to make people pay for a perceived wrong.
The relationships were good .
My main problem was with the ending. It was a bit far-fetched. People who know their life is in danger don’t just walk into more danger. They obey their instincts and run or ring the police.
