This book was well researched and was loaded with information about all the players. Since I'm a 'newcomer' to this sport I valued the information. It certainly suggests what to look for next year. Go Mariners!!
I have been a reader of the Baseball Prospectus annual for years, using it as a crutch to get me from the last pitch of the World Series to the first pitch in the spring. The Call Up, while nowhere near the length of the annual, does a fantastic job of highlighting certain interesting players who have either performed beyond their expectations such as Carlos Ruiz, players who got off to slow starts such as Albert Pujols, or noteworthy traded players such as Kevin Youkilis. For me, the most fun parts of this book were the articles at the end. Kevin Goldstein does an excellent job explaining the potential effects of the rule changes to the amateur draft featuring Scott Boras, Mike Fast (now working for the Houston Astros) shares his research on the effect of catcher mechanics on getting borderline pitches called strikes, and my favorite article, written by BP's Sam Miller, focuses on potential doomsday scenarios for the Texas Rangers.
Any fan of the annual will welcome this aptly-named Call-up as much as Angel fans have welcomed the arrival of Mike Trout. Definitely a must read.
