Been waiting a long time to get ahold of a new copy of this. Of all the Chess Box sets this seems to be the most coveted behind Bo Diddleys. It does not disappoint. Muddy was my introduction to the blues... the real Delta roots blues. He led me in the direction of Robert Johnson but I've always come back to Muddy. His Chess recordings are legendary and this set turns in with all the essential cuts and even a few surprises. From his deep toned voice that makes you not only believe every lyric but feel them too. I highly recommend any of his Chess studio work but you'll also want to check out his live Newport gig for proof that yes it really was that good. If you can find a copy of this grab it. Actually if you can find any of the Chess Box sets I recommend picking them up. *****

No blues collecton could be complete without Muddy Waters. The Chess set contains 72 songs on 3 CDs plus a 30 page booklet giving biographical account of Muddy Waters and his music. Born McKinley Morganfield in Rolling Fork, Mississippi, in 1915, he took his professional name from the Delta where he was born. He started out as a fieldhand on a plantation and, like many blues musicians, he moved to Chicago as a young man. In Chicago he became associated with the Chess brothers and their house songwriter, Willie Dixon (whose Chess Box is reviewed separately). Many of the songs in the collection are well known, and the collection includes "I can't be satisfied," "Rolling Stone," "Baby Please Don't Go," "Hoochie Coochie Man," "Close to YOu," "Southbound Train," and many others.

The booklet gives a listing of musicians playing in his band. They varied from session to session, and included Willie Dixon, Little Walter, Sunnyland Slim, Big Crawford, Otis Spann, Jimmy Rogers, James Cotton, etc. Muddy Waters, of course, is the vocalist (and guitar player). The set is a best buy and a recommended gift for people who like the blues, along with the Willie Dixon Chess setThe Chess Box, and some others.

I bought this for my husband for Christmas. He is a big Muddy Waters fan. He was thrilled! He said the recordings were very good and he found 4 songs on it that he had not been able to find anywhere else. He is a hard person to buy for. Thank you for helping me make him happy.

Delivery was very fast, especially right before Christmas.

Happy Amazon Customer

The Chess box series is a wet dream for any collector, just packaging wise (only 2or 3 CDs worth, but packaged in a LP sized box, with a large acompioning booklet).
These boxes stem from an era, when box sets, really were boxes.
In addition, I would argue, that the content on theses boxes is the zenith of any of these artist careers.
The production, the House bands, Willie Dixon's song prowess and band contribution make these recordings the best contribution of the early days of electric blues (city blues), rock n' roll (Chuck Berry & Bo Diddley), soul (Etta James, Fontella Bass et.al.).

This is the cram of the crop!!!

This is a must for all true blues fans, the Chess box set of the basic Muddy. All his classic hits as perhaps the greatest post-WW II influence on later blues artists and many of the rockers too.

Muddy Waters is one of the cornerstones. Such a range of vocalizations and subjects in this amazing collection of his blues. Should be a part of every blues lover's library.
