This is a well-known book (1971) by a famous photographer. Others have been inspired by it. Many photos, including many close-ups, are very abstract, often in soft focus. These are the kind of photos that can only be published after a photographer has already become well-known. If offered by an unknown beginner they would be dismissed as out-of-focus, poorly illuminated, and obscurely conceived. Many are taken from aircraft. Some images are well done, but most are questionable. Not my kind of photography. Still worth looking at in order to expand one's conception of what can be done with photography as an art form.

Ernst Haas wasn't known as a "nature photographer". He was a photojournalist, one of the stars of the Magnum photo agency (an agency of stars itself). What he did with "The Creation" was take a selection of his photos from various areas of the world and arrange them to illustrate the story of creation as presented by the world's religions. The results are stunning and the book is a classic. It was one of the first photography books I was exposed to when I became interested in photography about 40 years ago.

"The Creation" is not about nature or religious dogma. It is visual poetry from a master photographer. Although Haas was known for his black and white documentary work, he was also enthralled with Kodachrome film and color abstractions. This may be his greatest achievement as a color photographer. While long out-of-print, used copies of later editions of this work in both hardcover and paperback are available at reasonable prices. It is a classic book I highly recommend.

Ernst Haas was a brilliant photographer who used his photos to convey both a mood poem and an impression of creation. The only other work like this is Salgado's Genesis. Where Salgado offers technically splendid photos of cinematic style, Haas' photos are less technically perfect but no less impactful. The grain present on many of the images seems integral to the scenes. Many of the photos have blocked shadows. As with the grain, the effect works very well. The print values on the photos is high.

Surely a remarkable production...in its day and not surpassed in our digital times. The photography is meticulous and precise without feeling so...the production has a feel of spontaneity throughout...as we would expect the Great Bang to have about it. There is also a feeling of reverence for the subject. The presentation is ordered and filled with intelligence and sensitivity. I usually do not like comparing great artists, as each stands alone in their soaring accomplishment. But there is similarity...to me...in the power herein to the wonderful work of Franz Lanting. Their spirit seems to be compatible in form and ambiance. Their subject material may differ at times, but not their high presence of photographic soul. I highly recommend this book for its photographic standard, but even more for its ability to reach the soul and convey the great wonder of how we came to be, and its ability to make one wonder further as to why we came to be. A landmark work in color photography if ever there was one.
