I bought this book, myself. I DID NOT receive this book, from the author, in exchange for my opinion. I wrote this review because I did not want you to miss out on something this great. Believe me, it will make you feel good inside...
Never has a book gripped my heart and pulled on it's strings so profoundly as "THE DARK DOCTOR" by STELLA NOIR & JB DUVANE. NEVER Have I MET MORE "broken" people than the main characters in this book. Never have broken people needed each other more. What's broken in one seems to - ALMOST - fix what's broken in the other.
The heroine runs away from the one man she feels she truly loves and she feels truly loves her. Her body and her heart are telling her one thing. Her subconscious mind is telling her another.
He treats her one way when they are doing all the normal, everyday things couples do together. I.E. Sitting around at home, having dinner out, at the movies, watching TV at home etc.
But, when they make love, it's another story. It's like a switch has been flipped. It's still him but, there's something different. Something just slightly off. Something she can't quite put her finger on or even put into words. She doesn't know what it is but, something in her mind is telling her that it's definitely not right.
So, no matter how much she loves him, she feels she HAS to leave him. And she does just that. Yet, she clearly doesn't understand why. She argues with herself about it and achingly cries harder and harder, for several hours straight, as she's driving further and further away from him…
UNTIL…she hits an elk on a lonely and desolate road. Thankfully, only minutes before, she'd noticed a set of headlights a few miles behind her.
Mistakenly, she believes she's somehow safer. By not being completely alone. On an isolated road. In the middle of nowhere. With nothing around. For twenty miles. In all directions.
Number One: SHE'S.WRONG. There IS something out there. In the middle of nowhere. With nothing around IT. For twenty miles. In all directions. There's a Nice.Big.Dark.Spooky.Gothic.Old.Mansion. Sitting.Right.There. In the middle of nowhere. With nothing around. For twenty miles. In all directions. That she NEVER saw.
Number two: That car? With those headlights? A few miles behind her? On that lonely, desolate road? The one she'd noticed only minutes before?
NOT.A.GOOD.THING... … …Remember that part in the book synopsis? The part about Kidnapping? Oh! And let's not forget the part about INSANITY, shall we!?!
Nooope… … …Not.A.Good.Thing.At.All... … …
Eeew! The chills that went up my spine. The shudders that swam through my body. Made my skin creepy with icy, cold goosebumps. Oooh, so deliciously eerie!
It was tantalizingly perfect. The entire book. All the players. In this game. That's not a game. So genuinely Real. So intriguingly Different. So incredibly Broken.
Yet, through all this. Through all the horrific things that have happened in these people's lives. Up to this crucial pinnacle where they all come together. They are still incredibly tender, caring, understanding and loving of each other. Well, most of them are, anyway.
. . . AND THEN THERE'S THE HEAT. . .
Yeah, the sex is Rough, Tough and INDEED VIOLENT at times! I can't tell you the "why's" about it being okay in this instance, but it is. It ends up working, just right, for this book. Again, I can't tell you "why" without bringing "spoilers" into this review. And, I can honestly tell you, I didn't mind it at all. That's the reason I bought this book - the promise of deep, dark, sexy erotica. I love "Captive/Hostage" books. And both STELLA NOIR & JB DUVANE delivered that - quite well - with "THE DARK DOCTOR."
THIS IS NOT A "CLINICAL" BOOK! THIS IS NOT A "LECTURE" ON ANY PART OF SOCIETY!
THIS IS A GOOD, SOLID, BEAUTIFUL and HAUNTING ROMANTIC STORY!!!
If this book wanted to…AND I SAID "IF"… It could be taken, and read, as a way to give hope and understanding to many folks. It could be a beacon for what or how things can go so wrong for abused children and how sometimes, something as Simple and Easy As LOVE could - back when they were young and yet, still can today, as the adults they are - go a long way to comfort and right what is wrong with an abused one's Heart, Mind, Body and Soul.
You truly will not be disappointed with this book. It's worth the price.
