Well crafted assassination plot

The Day of the Jackal is set during the 1960s and tells the story of a professional hitman hired to assassinate the president of France, Charles de Gaulle. The assassin is given the codename "Jackal" by his employers, hence the name of the book. The bulk of this novel is given to a detailed description of the Jackal's preparation for the assassination as well as the French government's attempts to identify and stop him.

Frederick Forsyth has an unusual style of writing that is very clean and sparse in his use of language, but also highly detailed and meticulous in terms of plotting. It's obvious that he did a great deal of research before writing and every page of the novel reads as though it is describing real places and real events. His style has often been described as similar to journalism, and that's not a bad comparison.

The closest thing to a weakness that I would cite is that this is not a character driven novel. While the characters are far from cardboard cutouts, neither are they lavished with a great number of moments that reveal emotional depth. But this book is not meant to be a melodrama or character study, it's a plot driven novel that does an excellent job of laying out a fascinating story while slowly building suspense until the climax. In reality, there was no notable weakness at all, this is a very well crafted novel that I highly recommend.

I first read this book in the 60s when I was in my twenties. It shocked me and educated me. The research and the writing so captivated me that I went on to read nearly all of his books. Deighton was the modern renaissance man gifted with the arts and science of creation. And Bomber may well be his most thoroughly and brilliantly crafted work. He describes the machinery and the inhumanity of war and thereby reveals the humanity of war.

The Day of the Jackal lived up to my expectations and surpassed my expectations in other ways. Forsyth lived up to his praise for being very astute in the realm of international intrigue. Which, I must remind you, is not espionage. He also knows the French language very well, which at times is displayed in the work. I went into this book expecting a run of the mill spy novel, which it is not. It is very impressive, creative, and realistic which draws the reader into pages, watching the events unfold. At times, it may seem slow, but at other times is very fast. This is necessary to build foundation for later action, and also to shed light on the real pace of international intrigue. Overall, this novel is a good read that I would recommend. It was a fun and exciting read, which would be good for a rainy day. Definitely would recommend.

In this story the protagonist is a police investigator. He is assigned to an arson investigation. The investigation is unusual because of the speed and high temperature of the fire. Two additional factors fill out the story = a young boy in an abusive situation who gets swept up into the fire starters web and the protagonist's wife whom he thinks might be stepping out on him again.

Fun read from an author that knows the ins and outs of international intrigue. The story takes place in the early 60s and is exciting as if it happened today. An assassin, politicians, cops, ex Foreign Legionaries all come together in the story of the hiring of a cold blooded killer after the President of France. There have been two movies based on this book, the first is very close to the original story and the second uses the idea of the book and puts it into current times. The first is the better of the two if you are a purest. The book is by far much better than the movie. You won't be disappointed if you enjoy spy or detective stories.

It was good, but perhaps it is the factual side of my nature, but I liked Fighter much better. However, using this fictionalised format Deighton certainly got to grips with the human side of the conflict and the horror of the war for both bombers and their fl;ying defenders. I am probably being too harsh so on reflection I have lifted it from a three star to a four. It is certaibly recommended to anyone, who like me, is fascinated by the world war 2 air war.

I first read this novel forty years ago. In the subsequent decades I have read a good deal of miltary history, especially dealing with RAF Bomber Command. I am now reading 'Bomber' on my Kindle and this novel holds up very well. Deighton has clearly done his research very thoroughly and, in addition to painting a gripping picture of the air war and those involved in it, I can find very few errors in his depiction of the conflict. If you want to know how the bomber campaign was carried out against Germany, read this book. Please remember that over 55,000 young men of Bomber Command lost their lives in the conflict.
