For modern-era gangster films, The Departed is hard to top. With its themes of violence and betrayal, it's a great film with fine acting by Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Wahlberg, and Matt Damon. Set in Boston, The Departed is based loosely on the story of infamous mob boss Whitey Bulger, with Jack Nicholson playing the character of Francis "Frank" Costello, a fictional version of Bulger.

Some great actors (Mark Wahlberg in particular, but you can't go wrong with Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, and Martin Sheen) and a plot that keeps you engaged... until the end, which I found disappointing. Bang, bang, bang: that seemed like a lazy way to untangle all the knots of the narrative.

There's Jack Nickelson, playing a mob boss who definitely has a few loose screws up in his noggin. There's Matt Daman, playing a police officer who's on the mob boss's side but nevertheless wants to look out for himself first and foremost. There's Leonardo DeCaprio, playing an undercover cop determined to bring down his mark and come out of this whole mission alive. And then there's everyone else...I could sing praises for every actor in this extraordinary film, but I just don't have that kind of time. Overall, "The Departed" is a movie that should be placed into a genre of it's own as it goes above and beyond any police procedural and gangster film. My only negative comment is that they could have tried to utter a few lines without swearing...a little less language and we'd have a perfect score...as it stands now, it's at 4.9. I'd certainly watch this film over and over again anyway...and so should you. Enjoy.

Jack Nicholson and Mark Wahlberg played their characters quite well. Walberg with his "don't give a s***e" attitude was quite fun to watch.

Nicholson however, total dominated every scene he played. The intensity wrapped in brilliant one-liners had me laughing out loud almost every time.
The supporting actors were played well too. But these 2 made the movie a real treat.

Leonardo
Tis was and will be one of the best movies around for years if he keeps it up.
The man is a a classic performer and I truly enjoyed the entire series.............
After all a little mafia and crime never has hurt the American reputation it has garnered over the years lol
