Cher is a woman that rose to fame as I was growing up. I always had the illusion that many celebrities had easy lives. I also had the illusions that if you look pulled together on stage or on TV, that you have your act together. After reading many biographies including this one, I have realized that is far from the truth.
Being an entertainer, you have be comfortable with taking risks and suffering the consequences. It is a very visible world. When you fail, you have an audience. Other parts of entertainers world's though, are subject to conjecture. Like me, you assume all sorts of things. A book like this tells you a bit more about Cher as a person, growing up and starting out in the business. In a lot of ways, you assume once people become famous, they are part of this one big group of famous people that they are equals to. Also far from the truth. I find it interesting how Cher was Wowed by Bob Dylan liking the way she did his song.
You also see her side of some of the tabloid stories. That has to be so invasive. I'm shocked to this day, that an individual though famous can still be so harassed for an-other's gain.
I enjoyed the pictures of Cher growing up and hearing of the various things that she talked about in this book. I thought it was an interesting way to preface each story; The first time....
If you have an interest in Cher, you will enjoy this book. Nicely done and a pleasant read. Though I did find it heartbreaking at the end when she wrote of Sonny's death.

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com Review
Sonny Bono once said that Cher was so stupid that she thought the moon was the back side of the sun. Well, if he had lived to read this book he would be eating those very mean words. Cher had many first times in her life, and she puts them all down on paper here. For example, Cher shares her thoughts on politics in the section entitled "My First Allergic Reaction to Republicans." Here, she comments that Jackie Kennedy was much better looking than Mamie Eisenhower. How could anyone vote for Nixon, wonders Cher, when he was so "creepy" and his wife was "pinchy-faced"? But Cher thinks about more than just politics. There's also the first time she had sex with an Italian, the first time she had sex with a "bad boy" and the first time she had sex with a "mook." Cher even has something to say about clothing. If you're looking for a book that's hard to read, look elsewhere, but if you want the inside scoop on the depths of Cher's thoughts, served up in one-page essays, this is the book for you. --James DiGiovanna
From Library Journal
Cher's quasi-autobiography is divided into anecdotal mini-chapters, each with a title including "first" ("My First Memory," "My First Plastic Surgery"). The gimmicky format results in a lack of both continuity and depth?the text reads as if it were transcribed from tape recordings, and frequent passages of re-created dialog seem awkward and false. Scattered throughout, however, are entertaining reminiscences and infrequent glimpses of a likable and straightforward person. Especially touching are fragments that reveal the vulnerable child who survived a chaotic upbringing by idolizing Holly Golightly, listening to Broadway scores, using clothes to express herself, and dreaming of stardom. These moments of enlightenment make one hope for a thoughtful autobiography in the future. Cher has been the subject of a few biographies, the best of which is Lawrence J. Quirk's Totally Uninhibited (LJ 8/91). Recommended for public libraries with a demand for celebrity biographies.

From Booklist
Cher has battled on and off with chronic fatigue syndrome, so perhaps that's why she was too tired to write a real book. Even with a cowriter, all she could come up with are short vignettes playing on the "first" theme: "My First Bicycle" and "My First Bra" from the early chapters, and later, "My First Fifteen Minutes of Fame," "My First Mansion," and "My First Affidavit from a Plastic Surgeon." Finally, the collection concludes with "My First Tragedy," on the death of Sonny Bono. Each of these many, many vignettes gets a page or a couple of pages. The first-person writing is breezy enough, and interested fans will learn something of Cher and her life. But for the most part, this is like a TV show made up of clips. Just when you want to see more, the focus moves on to something else. Expect to see Cher on the talk-show circuit, hawking the book like she once hawked hair products ("My First Infomercial"). From Kirkus Reviews
A collection of short, easily digestible anecdotesof her first Rolling Stones concert, her first solo recording, her first wedding ceremonytold by Cher and committed to paper in a tone of talkiness that seems to come straight from the tape recorder. Each brief recollection, some not more than a paragraph in span, stands on its own, but the separate reflections combine to tell the larger story of Chers bumpy rise from poor sassy kid and naive starlet to independent singer and award-winning actress. Much to her credit, Cher has bypassed the common pitfall of the confessional genre: that of over-analyzing minor events and attributing to them major, long-term outcomes. Instead, the memories are stated sparsely; she doesnt spend too much time explaining them or justifying them emotionally. The result: a lighter, more enjoyable read. Though her bits and pieces dont always hang together solidly, and dont always follow in exact chronological order, the overall effect is nevertheless like listening in on Chers candid musings about significant events in her life. Oddly enough, her gimmicky format (most vignettes end too conveniently with an aphorism) actually works. Co-author Coplon has also been co-author to Sarah, Duchess of York. Despite cute, contrived styling, the reminiscences unfold in an honest and personal (though sometimes performed) fashion. As an added bonus, one can open the book at almost any page and start right inthe perfect arrangement for hard-pressed readers. I bought this as a gift but I read this book when ir first hit the shelves. As a Cher fan, I wanted to know things that happened behind the scenes. This is written a little differently than other books. Each chapter lasts only 3-4 pages. Don't misunderstand, the 'mini-chapter's are written very well, gets to the heart of the story and keeps a person's interest from cover to cover! It doesn't get too deep into her life, but it tells her story and explains a lot of things from behind the scenes. Even though it was a quick read, it was very fulfilling and I enjoyed it!

I love Cher and this book! It's a must-read for any big fan. If you've watched a lot of her interviews, many of these stories will be familiar, but lots of stuff I didn't know too. Excited for her new autobiography!

This is an easy to read account of alot of firsts in Cher's life - very interesting for anyone wanting to know more than you may have read written by others.

Okay, I was a bit skeptical about this book because of some reviews. However, upon starting the book, those fears quickly faded. Now, when I tell you this book is amazing, I mean it! It’s set up almost like a diary. Cher walks you through many of the ups and downs of her life. She doesn’t hold back. No, she’s very upfront about everything. You get everything from her first memory to Sonny’s death. It’s an emotional roller coaster. Definitely worth the read.

This book is full of interesting, funny stories. Each story is between 1 to 3 pages so I like to pick it up when I have a moment and read few of them. There are lots of photos what makes this book even more interesting. I bought it second hand but it came in a great condition.

Get to know Cher a little
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 28, 2019
Cher's autobiography is frank, candid and interesting. She shares a lot of anecdotes from her her life. It's a book about all of her first. First hit record, first lover, first loss, first memory etc.
It is at times funny, it is at times sad. The book lets you get a glimpse of the private person she is beyond being the legendary singer and actress known as Cher. I can recommend this to anyone who wants to know more about her. The only reason it is not getting a five star is because the book is episodic and doesn't give the full picture. It scratches on the surface rather than go in depth.

An insight

I enjoyed reading Cher's autobiography very much. She is an interesting figure whose career has spanned from the 60s to the mid-noughties (I saw her farewell concert and it rocked, but the question is, will she be back?).
The book is very honest about most things, although her apparent plastic surgeries are not gone into, but fair enough. Overall, worth what it cost.
